Mason, Griffin and Gibbs

How ironic that, 2 years after having one of the most rush-heavy offenses in football, we're reloading with a more (on-paper) talented backfield than at any point in our team's history, with Mason, Griffith, and Gibbs, in a more-balanced-type of offense? Helluva 1-2-3 punch! Not sure we've ever had 2 4-stars back there?

We’re 13 years removed from this backfield.

I really thought we were going to have a shot at the Heisman with Dwyer.

Im convinced he was the best RB in the country in 2008, but the team didn’t have the street cred yet to get his name on the national stage. Jahvid Best was getting all the hype and Dwyer was clearly better in my eyes. He was trucking LBs and outrunning DBs on the same damn play.

Unfortunately the 2009 hype around the team coincided with his weight gain and drop in speed. Was still a force as a BB but no longer the 2008 version that could have been a 1st Round Pick.

We were bad at running the option in 2008. If not for individual efforts by Dwyer and BayBay our record would have been way worse. They had several 50+ yard TDs.

That plus a few teams just had no idea how to defend it. The longer we ran 3-O in the conference the less the surprise factor mattered.

Tell me more triple-O stories Grandpa, it’s SO exciting!

That’s a fascinating trade. I knew BJS wanted to give RB a shot, but Howard moving to LB kind of comes out of nowhere. Good luck to them both. Learning a new position later in your college career cannot be easy.

Have either redshirted? Would we even want them to redshirt, knowing it would cost us spots in the next signing class?

My 2 cents (worth about 1): I think BJS will be used in short yardage type situations as a lead blocker or as a "big back". He has a little more size than most of our RBs. I think Howard moving is 1) too much talent at RB and 2) help him learn a new position that might give him a path to the NFL. He might be able to make a roster as a Special Teams player (which he was great at last year) and a backup LB.

I bet he can cover guys pretty well out of the backfield if needed but will take time to learn how to fit in run defense.

You can say the same about BJS. We've seen enough I think to say he doesn't have an NFL future at LB. Maybe at RB. But unless he takes a RS year and Mason declares early, it's pretty hard to see that happening either. UGA has proven though you don't need a lot of touches to make the NFL if you're good enough, and in a lot of ways that's preferable to have much more tread wear. However he's had injuries already, and unless he shows out at RB he's not freak enough of an athlete to make me think he'll get a shot outside of working his way in as a UFA.

The NFL for either of these guys is a pipe dream. Get that degree boys!
