Glad to see he will be on the field more often.

Avery Roberson (or somebody) must be laying the smack down if we can afford to lose Reis at safety and nickel.

Many of us speculated on the possiblility. I just hope he can handle the licks. Concussions are cumulative, and the one he got last year against FSU was as nasty as it gets. I would still expect Moore and T Anyansi to each get significant playing time a game here or there.

I also wouldn't count out the hope of each of us that Guyton or Chambers will be great enough to hurt somebody's feelings as a true freshmen. Even if that's the case, it looks like enough cushion that Gailey would be able to redshirt at least one of them now.

Just food for thought.

...and lets not forget Wheeler and Eric Williams...the coaches have high expectations for Williams...and are hoping he will be at 220 lbs when he gets in so he can go ahead and start getting used to the LB position.

OK. Here is the bio.

Eric Williams

Various notes from the bio. Listed as a safety. This means fast for a linebacker. May play DE. This means he is being expected to be able to manage the big boys, i.e. shed blocks from OL's.

Fast enough for Safety. Strong/Big enough for DE. Looks like a mega LB to me.

Don't forget about Gary Guyton.. He was said to be a great athlete in HS. Was All-Region in basketball too.

I love Reis' attitude and play making ability. But I have to say I hate to see us take this move because it just makes us so damn small. Hopefully Tenuta can configure a scheme that keeps these guys moving and away from the OLs or they will get killed.

I don\'t know

Reis simply isn't big enough to play strongside linebacker. Bigger teams could run at him the whole game and he could do nothing to stop it. He can't handle the tight end of most teams. It's not about strength, it doesn't matter if Reis could lift a truck, it's simply a matter of mass. Reis doesn't have the mass to handle the size of big teams like say...GEORGIA.

Really this is not a positive overall. It says that Moore wasn't cutting it(our LBs fear)so we have to go to a semi-proven player to fill.Reis brings play-making but he is vulnerable to getting smothered in size at times. There will actually be a bunch of TBs who are bigger.Hope our DL slows them down.
It would nice to think Avery doing well at safety is the catalyst but more likely the weak LB play.
Chambers will be starting at LB before the end of yr my guess is.

Plus remember that Tugboat has been hurt so maybe he could help out this Fall. It does say that Moore is not ready though.

The good news is that our defensive line is bigger than I can remember so a smaller LB will have some help. Definitely look for a freshman to start at LB come game 1.

Joe Cake, I thought that aboue Wilkerson last year

A 230 lbs DE? that's too light, right? Well, our defense was outstanding, and it turned out his speed and strength nullifed his lack of size. Reis is the same size or bigger than Wimbush was, so it could work. I too wondered, though, why not play the Will Linebacker, but that's something Tenuita knows more about than me.

On the question of shedding much heavier blockers, it does seem like Reis' weight would be a problem. Maybe he can make up for it somewhat by being quick enough to avoid being hit directly. But on the positive side, there are some players who hit harder than you would think they could based on their size. You really can't explain it, but it happens. I keep thinking of that little linebacker from the Atlanta area who played at Clemson a few years back. He was about Reis size, IIRC, and he hit like a ton of bricks.

There were times where you saw it get to us...like at the end of the FSU game...and at times in the UGA game. Of course, those are teams with loads of talent and they give everyone fits. What you saw is trouble when they came right at us...thus nullifying our speed. Plus...the wearing down over a long game by physical pounding. The Clemson game was an anomaly.

But I do agree that overall our defense kicked butt last year the majority of the time...and we used the speed to a distinct advantage.

What is odd thought is that Reis is not big (5-11 to 6-0 and 205-210) or fast (between 4.75 and 4.8). What he possesses is tremendous football instincts (timing, angles, reads, etc.). He is a FOOTBALL PLAYER. Reminds me of Jay Martin back in the late 80's and natl champ year.

I feel more confident whenever Chris is on the field.

LB is one of the worries going into this season and this just makes the situation worse. Hopefully one of the incoming freshman can take over the job. I know Chambers and Guyton are built much more like linebackers and have a better shot at shakin the big uglies...

I specifically watched Reis last year several

times and he was always in on the play. He caused several turnovers when I was watching. He made many key stops when we needed them. I was always impressed.

It will be interesting to see how he does at a position since nickle is more of a freelance guy many times (perhaps nickle plays more to his perceived strength of instinct). Also how will he react to not being the least worn out guy on the field.

I think Tenuta knows more than anyone on this board. If you have ever been to practice or couldnt tell from past games, Reis is the best form tackler we have. He will do the job.

Nah, you're off base. No offense, but LB is not DL. Reis doesn't have to "line-up" against anybody. He CAN run circles around EVERYBODY. And be a mean mofo doing it. He's a football player.

Brilliant move on the part of CCG, CJT and Co. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Re: I don\'t know

If a team runs right at him it is a guaranteed 5 yards per carry. It's great that he is fast enough to get around some people, but he won't stop anyone if they are running right at him, there is simply not enough time. Wilkerson had a lot of help at DE because he was backed by two future second and third round draft picks in Fox & Smith. If we don't change something our leading tackler will be either Landry or Butler.

JoeCakeEater,

Valid points, and they are taken seriously.

So - what would you do differently if you were Chan Gailey?

Re: I don\'t know

Not to put words in Joe's mouth, but I don't think anybody here has the answers. It's obvious the coaching staff is doing the best they can with the guys they have to work with, but it's also obvious this isn't their preferred option either or they would have started out with this setup. I have confidence in the coaches and the players to figure out a scheme that give us our best chance to be successful. The fact that our DL should be better...and bigger this year, and that our DBs should be good will take some of the pressure off our LBs. I assume we haven't seen the end of position changes and that we will see a lot of different looks from the D this fall. But it sure would be nice if we could magically get bigger all of a sudden.
