Tevin Washington

I have to laugh at those criticizing TW and remembering the flawless play of Nesbitt in the same post.

I watched the whole 2009 game before this game and Washington played a better game in the loss than Nesbitt did in our win. Nesbitt could not pitch reliably to save his life and many more of his pitches ended up being fumbled than Washington. And Washington is definitely more accurate. Sure he missed a couple of open receivers under pressure but so did Nesbitt.

He also was rushing well.

The difference was a defense that kept VT to 3 points in the first half in 2009 and held on in the second half just enough.

I am not trying to dog Nesbitt, just trying to bring perspective to the memory in comparison to TW. He was tough but not quick, not accurate, and every pitch was an adventure. On balance, I think the trade- offs balance out versus TW this year.

Not sure why our backs can catch one week and can't catch the next. But both Nesbitt and TW had to deal with that burden.

So, let's blame TW for Orwin Smith's horrible drop that stopped our first drive of the game when we were putting a hurting on Vippy. Let's blame TW for the PI non-call that resulted in our second stopped drive when the Vippy player tackled Embry. Let's also just judge TW for the one quarter when he did bad (4th) because we changed our play calling to be more pass heavy with an o-line that can't pass block for öööö. The reason he was calling his number so much was because Foster was forcing him to do so. The pitch was taken away most of the night, and the inside runs were being blown up because for some reason Finch and friends couldn't get a push up the middle. That only leaves one option.

Also, he called his number less in this game than in the Clemson game, and I didn't see people bitching about him calling his number too much during the Clemson game. Teams are taking away the pitch and the dive. That's how they're playing us now. That's what they did even when we had Nesbitt at QB, and look at how much he used to call his number. The only difference between JN and TW is that JN would give it to the B-back a bit more frequently because our B-backs (Dwyer and Allen) were a higher caliber and could actually gain more than 2-4 yards.

It's unfortunate that our fans are so quick to öööö on our players after a loss. We have a thread about getting rid of a player's scholarship, and a positive thread about our QB turns into a bash-fest, searching for all of TW's negatives ... oh, and the obligatory, laughable call for Vad Lee.

This.

Even in my bourbon-induced stupor, I wasn't angry with the team. I wanted to punch a ref in the mouth for that call on JA (it's football, you don't have to throw a flag every time players get chippy), I was depressed watching Hokies walking into the Varsity all smiles, but I wasn't upset with our team.

Here's why: in a supposed "rebuilding year," we were one play away from beating our second top-10 team this season and a win over Duke to another trip to the ACCCG. Think on that a moment before y'all go pissing and moaning bout how TW failed "us" (yeah, like you ööööing play) or how Vad Lee is our true starter. Guess what, if he was so damn special, he'd be on the field now. Until he wins the position, the best guy for the job is on that damn field.

The whole team played with energy, and tried their asses off...they just let their emotions get the better of them sometimes. I don't know if this is true of Tevin. But we definitely looked like the Edmonton Oilers against the Islanders when they had Gretzky. I still think UVA may take the coastal and the UNC could beat VPI @ Lane next Thursday with the extra rest they've got.

I think Tevin is a good QB for Tech. I don’t think he can lead us to a magical season, though. He's progressed in his option reads, but in the passing game he still misses guys. And I'm not talking about poor passes, I'm talking about not even seeing a receiver that's wide open.

Early in the 4th (I think), when GT was down by a score, Johnson called a pass on the first play of our drive, Tevin dropped back had time to make a decision and got sacked. One problem: Roddy Jones was streaking down the middle of the field with no VT defenders within 10 yards of him. Should've been a touchdown.

Stuff like that just reminds me that we're still not clicking on offense yet. And we won't, until we find a QB who can make those plays.

^did you go to the game last night? there was a student that had your avatar blown-up on a poster.

That's the only play of value I saw him make where he did a poor job. The garbage time passing doesn't count. He got little help from his receivers in the second half.

He didn't suck when we managed to get down the field in 25 seconds at the end of the first half. And he wasn't playing on defense. He's not the reason we lost last night.

TW played a GREAT game. VT's defense is #1 in the conference, right? It is expected that they are going to make a play every now and then.

TW is an 8-4 QB. He will never be a 10-2 kind of a guy. Glad we have him though. I do expect better QBs in the future.

Our right tackle got owned on pass protection. TW had zero time.

TW can get us to where Nesbitt got us and more. What does that mean? He can beat UGA, and he can win us an ACC championship. That's all I want. That's all I care about. The only thing above that is a national championship.

What are you expecting? What is this "magical season" you are referring to? A national championship? Even Joe Ham couldn't get us that, so don't hold your breath, buddy.

National championship? nah, I don't expect that. A magical season to me is 2 losses or less. We can get there with the right QB. I think Tevin is an 8,9,10 win kind of guy. Still good, not great.

Without the drops he'd have gone 70% last night and would have prolonged at least two more drives. Other than the final play, everything he threw last night was accurate. His option reads were almost always right last night as well. From the end zone you could clearly see that his decisions to keep instead of pitch were usually because a VT guy had outside leverage and was in the pitch lane. We did not lose the game due to Tevin. We score in the mid 30s without the drops, which would have been our highest point total ever vs VT.

TW wasn't the reason we lost last night. That would be #45. TW did miss seeing a wide open Roddy running downfield in the 4Q that could have tied the game.

His receivers have got to step up. Melton and Hill had some nice catches. But Orwin's drop in the first quarter was almost criminal.
