Six 16 team conferences split into 8 team divisions. You play everyone in your division and divisional winner based solely on these 7 games. You also get 1 FCS game, 2 rotating cross-divisional games and 1 inter-sectional FBS game.

The 12 divisional winners are the playoff teams. First round is conference championship. The 6 conference champions are seeded, with top 2 getting 2nd round bye.

It wouldn't take much re-alignment to get to the 6 conferences.

Yeah that would be sweet.

Below is what the first and quarterfinal rounds of the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket will look like:

First round
  • No. 1 team (bye)
  • No. 2 team (bye)
  • No. 3 team (bye)
  • No. 4 team (bye)
  • No. 12 team at No. 5 team
  • No. 11 team at No. 6 team
  • No. 10 team at No. 7 team
  • No. 9 team at No. 8 team
Quarterfinals
  • No. 1 team vs. No. 8/9 team
  • No. 2 team vs. No. 7/10 team
  • No. 3 team vs. No. 6/11 team
  • No. 4 team vs. No. 5/12 team
Following that, the remaining four teams will play in the semifinal games, with the highest-ranked team picking its preferred bowl venue. The winners of the semifinal games will advance to the College Football Playoff championship game to determine that season's national title winner.

Playoff based off most recent College Football Playoff rankings; champion teams are based off conferences' highest-ranking teams.

SeedTeamHow they made it
1GeorgiaSEC champion
2MichiganBig Ten champion
3TCUBig 12 champion
4USCPac-12 champion
5Ohio StateAt-large (Big Ten)
6AlabamaAt-large (SEC)
7TennesseeAt-large (SEC)
8Penn StateAt-large (Big Ten)
9ClemsonACC champion
10Kansas StateAt-large (Big 12)
11UtahAt-large (Pac-12)
12TulaneAAC champion

The top four seeds would consist of:

  • No. 1 Georgia
  • No. 2 Michigan
  • No. 3 TCU
  • No. 4 USC
The first round would consist of the following games:

  • No. 12 Tulane at No. 5 Ohio State
  • No. 11 Utah at No. 6 Alabama
  • No. 10 Kansas State at No. 7 Tennessee
  • No. 9 Clemson at No. 8 Penn State
The quarterfinals would consist of the following games before the Playoff advanced to the semifinals and national championship game:

  • No. 1 Georgia vs. Penn State/Clemson
  • No. 2 Michigan vs. Tennessee/Kansas State
  • No. 3 TCU vs. Alabama/Utah
  • No. 4 USC vs. Ohio State/Tulane

Conf champions should get a home game no matter their record. Same as NFL division champs over wild cards.

Rankings are subjective, but…

I really like how they reward the “better” teams with home field and their pick of bowl games (the latter being especially creative).

All conference champions should make the field.

So conference champ is not the team that wins the conference title game? Are they doing away with the that game?

TCU nor USC are conference champions so I'm confused by the table.

Six of the twelve teams are SEC or B1G. Easy to see what this is about. Who was impressed with Alabama this year, please raise your hand? They won a lot of close games over not-so-great competition and they took two losses in the process. Why should that team be in a championship playoff? Ditto Penn State.

Either do away with CCGs if they’re not going to mean anything, or pick the winner of the game. Go to an 8-team format and include all P5 conference champions plus the top 3 G5 champions. This season that’s:
UGAg - SEC
Michigan - B1G
KS St or TCU - B12
Utah or USC - P12
Clemson - ACC
Tulane - AAC
Troy - Sun Belt
UTSA - CUSA

Would love to watch The Green Wave wash all over Tosu.

This is funny. The SEC and BIG get more teams because they play better football. You are still living in the past. Conference championships mean absolutely nothing anymore. I’m sure Clemson is out there celebrating big time over that win. And I‘m sure hometowns all across the southeast are having parades for Troy’s players. If you don’t like it now just wait until it expands to 24 and the SEC gets 8 or 9 teams in. Just admit that you don’t like actual games determining a National Champ and would just rather Champions be appointed or as you said “just pick the winner”. Remember how awesome it was to have the editor of the Tucson Times and Akron Beacon picking the National Champion. That was awesome.

Can someone explain the table for me. It says conference champion next to TCU and USC, but they are not conference champions. And if the top rated team in the conference is chosen as conference champion then what is the purpose of the conference "championship" game?

As for Alabama, you have to win the games on the field, I don't care how good you are supposed to be.

They mean nothing because they are forced to mean nothing. Please tell me you can see this.

Personally, I’m fine with conferences doing away with CCGs and anointing a champ. But they won’t do that - too much money to lose.

So take away the CCG’s this year and you get UGAg, Michigan, TCU, S Cal, and Clemson, plus Tulane, Troy, and UTSA. Why give Alabama and tOSU another shot? They already lost their conference.

We don’t have to dissociate everything to have a national championship playoff. That’s what’s warped in all this.

I'll just plug in the comments on playoffs from the late, great Mike Leach. Well worth a watch.
