Why don't we claim a national championship for 1951? We were undefeated and we were ranked number one in two polls.

Good enough for me, I'll claim it from now on. 1917, 1928, 1951-1952 back-to-back, 1990.

How in the world did anyone consider Tennessee number one. They finished 10-1 and we finished 11-0-1. We were 7-0 in the SEC and they were only 5-0. Most SEC teams played seven games that season. Tennessee lost their bowl game to Maryland. They should be embarrassed to claim the title instead of respected.

Back in those days, the National Champ was declared prior to a bowl game. A couple of times, the “National Champ” got smacked in their bowl game

Still doesn't answer the OP. Why don't we claim it?

I’ll claim it for GT. 1951 team gave up 14 points twice all year and single digits in every other game. Beat the heck out of LSU, Bama and UGA

We weren't ranked #1 and we tied Duke. We don't claim retroactive championships like a lot of schools do (cough, Bama, UGA) and I'm good with that. 1956 was another year at least one minor service retroactively called us national champions.

What is more frustrating is that some in the present day try to downplay 1952 and claim INS was a minor poll. Of course it wasn't at all minor at the time and was one of the two forerunners to the coaches poll.

Maryland is the rightful 1951 champion.

We should claim the title. If any serious news agency gave us the title, we should claim it. That's what EVERYBODY does. Why do we always act so high and mighty; this is dumb, dumb, dumb.

I agree Maryland has a good case. Tennessee has no case and should be embarassed to claim any part of the title. We have a much better case than Tennessee.

We also should have been the clear SEC champion. 7 and 0 is better than 5 and 0.

We do seem to take the high road as opposed to almost all other schools. We never get credit for it from anyone else.

When we win our next title just issue a press statement that basically states in retrospect, we actually have X number of titles. Since everything will need to be updated for the title just won, might as well make the change at the same time. BOOM.

We finished 5th in both the Coaches and AP poll that year. I am guessing it is because we started the season unranked. It seems like it was much harder to move up back then because of lack of media coverage and a lot of the voters not watching all the games. The olden times were weird.

Actually, Dodd had always maintained his 1956 team was his best. The close loss to Tennessee, with a depleted roster cost them. They destroyed LSU 39-7, and ended the year shutting out Florida, Alabama, and UGa

There were players of the 51 thru 53 period that thought the '51 team was actually better than the '52 and I have to agree with them. I always thought the '56 team was Dodd's best. We were not very big but we were really quick and fast, of course a different sort of game back then.

My dad, who was an O’Keefe alum, Class of ‘57, was of the belief that the ‘56 team could have arguably been Dodd’s best.

Tech needs to claim 1951 as National Champs. No one beat us! And virtually the same team went 12-0 in 1952! If we put it on our scoreboard with the other 4 it's official. Having 5 national titles in football sounds mighty good!

    GO JACKETS!
