1984 BYU and the 1990 combination of Georgia Tech and Colorado are the most recent entries in the worst national champion

Based on the combined resumes of the three teams, I can see why they're thought of like that in the national media. There would be the same argument against a team like Kansas or USF if they won it all this year. Would "upstarts" like that really measure up with 2003-2004 USC? Or 2001 Miami? Or 1999 F$U? Or 1996 Florida?

BTW, I'd put 2002 Ohio State on that worst list too. They were one of the luckiest teams in CFB history and could've easily lost four games that year.

Tennessee, 1998 (I think). That was the absolute luckiest team I have ever seen. The fumble by the Arkansas QB was a complete fluke.

Another good one. I remember their first game at Syracuse was another steal. The 'Cuse fumbled with about 3 mins left while driving/running out the clock. Tennessee drove down (thanks to a gift spot on a 4th down) and kicked a field goal at the buzzer to win 34-33.

I'm not sure who the worst National Champion is, but I do know who the best National Champion is: 1995 Nebraska. They were a true Juggernaut in every aspect.

For whatever reason, I cannot get the link to open up --must be one of those 'blocked at work' things.

Not because they split the title with GT --but I'd have to think that Colorado in 1990 was one of the luckiest teams (don't know about using the term 'worst' for a team that wins outright, or shares a national title --maybe 'least deserving' fits better) to be awarded a MNC:

> Awarded five downs in order to defeat a Missouri team that finished 4-7.

> Beneficiary of a questionable clipping call that negated a Notre Dame punt return in a 10-9 Orange Bowl victory.

> In the only common opponent comparison with the team they split the MNC with --defeated Nebraska 27-12 where GT beat the 'Huskers 45-21

> In their lone 'official' loss was defeated 23-22 by an 8-4 Illinios team that was blitzed in the Hall of Fame Bowl 30-0 by a Clemson team that was defeated 21-19 by GT.

Thank you UPI voters of 1990 for getting it right!

And they were losing 12-0 going into the 4th quarter against Nebraska that year

Colorado 1990 was clearly worse than Tech 1990, in every objective measure except for Media Hype.

The 1980 UGa team did not beat one team ranked in the final top 20. How are they not included? I have seen at least one commentator name them the worst NC of all time.

I'll take being the "worst" national champion every year.

Ditto.

I am not sure whether the answer is evaluating the MNC decision or the assumed strength of the teams or both.

But even BYU beat everyone they played and everyone the bowl system allowed them to play.

If the experts want to debate about MNC winners they can, but without a playoff no one really knows whether BYU would have beaten anyone else they played. IMO, even if another team had finished undefeated that year, BYU did all they could do and would have deserved at least a shot to prove they were the best.

The criteria for this "honor" seems to be not being a preseason favorite by the people whining about their favorite not winning enough.
