2 or 3 out of the top 50....

That's currently what we have. Depending on the site we either have 2 or 3 players currently committed who are ranked in the top 50 in GA. Even so we are still sniffing around a top 25 class. That shows that there is TREMENDOUS depth in GA and we do a pretty good job of regional/national recruiting.

I am posting this not to complain about our recruiting but to show what a tremendous opportunity we have. We would have top 20 recruiting classes most every year signing 5 - 7 out of the top 50 to go along with the other regional and national recruits (and non-top 50 players).

We finally have coach with the potential to be a great GA recruiter. He is a legend already in GA and has huge respect from the HS coaches. He is putting together a staff with ties to GA. This is our biggest opportunity to improve our talent - recruit GA better. I personally think it happens and if so, look out. Recruiting classes like last year will be more of the norm rather than the exception.

Remember that only about half of the top 50 could get into Tech. That still leaves a lot of talent on the board. I believe we will get our share. Maybe not this year, but starting next year.

Is it even that many? I'd say less than 20%, which means we have to get half of them AND they have to fit our needs. The real key is expanding the inroads we've made in Florida IMO.

I'm so excited about the future...I will be a season ticket holder for the first time next year. THWG.

You're right, Clapper. When I was a kid my dad was a friend and golf partner with a member of the GT athletic board. One Saturday as we listened to the game on the radio he told me about a conversation he had had with this gentleman about Tech's recruiting: the previous year's senior class in Ga had produced 8 or 9 D1 prospect OT's. Tech could only talk to 3 of them, and 2 of those had come to Tech. The balance went to schools that were, at that time, our annual opposition. I have always remembered that as I watch our SA's compete against the majority that got away. Pretty stiff odds.

Since none of us really know I guess we can all chose to believe what we want to believe. I believe that there is no way we can only recruit 1 out of ever 5 available athletes in GA. Using that percentage, we could only recruit approx 15 players in the entire state each year and roughly 40 players in the entire state of FL. Not sign this many but recruit them.

I think academics are part of the reason we haven't done that well but I think the bigger reason is that we haven't had a good product to sell (including facilities, conference, etc..) and we haven't had a coach with ties to the state or one that stuck around long enough to create contacts. The kids go to uga or they go to other SEC schools or national schools like ND and Michigan.

O'Leary stuck around the longest and had the most sustained on field success, and he had recruiting going really well before he left. Still he was a gruff Yankee and both our conference appeal and facilities were a lot worse back then. Time will tell, but I think folks will be shocked at the nbr of quality GA kids we sign in upcoming years.

Have you ever wondered how many of UGag's (for instance) starters were qualified to attend GT out of HS, and if they were qualified, how many had seriously considered GT? Likely very few, and it's probably the same for the 1st stringers at the other factory schools around us. IMHO, the question is how to find and secure as high a percentage of the kids both qualified and wanting a technical education as possible, wherever they are. And, as Clapper said, how many of the ones available will be what we need? Drop-back QB's and gazelle WR's won't be, now.

According to those who follow recruiting closely, this is a relatively weak year in GA academically for the top players. Per several threads earlier in the year, etc., last year's group was more prepared academically than this year's is. Hopefully that will change going forward. Say what you will for ugag, but they have also increased the requirements to get in school (at least for non athletes) so we can hope that will help raise the bar for all HS athletes in the state.

The freebies that are a result of the Ga. Lottery make parents think twice about sending their kids out of state. That is the primary (if not sole) reason why UGAg feels they can crow about any increased status. But don't think for one second that the entrance requirements for the athletes has increased. They still recruit/sign a few bright ones but most of them are still knuckle-dragging neanderthals in the classrooms.

old gold is about right. Coaches told me about 40%-45% on any given year of the top 100 are eligible for tech.

This is a running theme, isn't it? Part of the reason for the success of our offenses from 2003-05 was GOL's recruiting his last couple of years. Then CCG had middling recruiting class until his last full year of recruiting, which turned out to be one of the best classes in Tech history.

Hopefully CPJ keeps Giff and keeps the recruiting from last season going to some extent.

It is a FACT, that we can usually sign 45 to 50% of the top 50 in Georgia on any given year. The academic standards have slowly gotten higher in this state and it is showing.

Now, there are some Gt alum that in fact want us to believe that there only 20 to 25% of the top 50 in Georgia that can hack it at Matech, but that is not true. these guy's that espouse this, somehow make themselves feel better about their degree from GT if they can tout that only that small percentage can make it at GT.

We just need to keep guy's like Giff around that CAN recruit this state better than some coaches.
IMHO..With PJ now with us, and the assts he will bring with strong state of Georgia ties, we WILL recruit a lot better in this state.

In my heart I know you are right - we can offer possibly 50% of the GA top 50. Question is, how many will want to come to Tech over all the factories also recruiting them? What will PJ, Giff, et al have to do to convince more of these guys that GT really is the place for them in spite of the study requirements, limited choice of major, etc.,etc.,etc.?

Point of order - there is a difference between being able to get accepted to Tech and being able to 'hack it' once you're here.

Please check the facts--flunkgate cost us 10 players
and the probation hurt just as much. You can extend thanks to GOL for his role in that debacle. Chan did an admirable job considering what he was saddled with.:fingersx:
