If I understand the rules correctly, you have to be ranked to make the playoffs. As a result, currently only 5 conference champs from 2024 would be ranked. If assumed an unranked conference champ can make the field, then Tulane would get in and Notre Dame would be dropped based on current ratings - below is hypothetical based on current rankings - with 6 BigI teams qualifying and of course top 4 getting byes and 5-12 plaiying at top seed at home of high seed in first round.

The ACC will need to play the game better. Playing an important game non conference the first game is ok but beating each other up in conference early is a mistake.
The media will swoon over the power of the Big Trn this year (example potential) and that helps their rankings. History shows that the hype matters.

More importantly back to this year, no team has ever made the current format with 2 losses. We are already down to 19 undefeated power 5 teams only 1/4 of the way through the season and most teams have only played 1 or 2 conference games.

The SEC West doesn’t have any undefeated teams so all are only one loss from probable elimination from the CFP.

The Big 12 has both Texas and Oklahoma still undefeated but I would venture to say the Big 12 will move heaven and earth to make sure those two don’t make the playoffs. Lots of bad feelings there.

Will be an interesting couple of months coming up.

This is so true! It is a disservice to college football to even take a vote prior to October 1. The factories who simply repack every year are fairly constant, but the TCUs of the world can go from mediocre to very good to bad all in 2 years' time. You just don't know. Sagarin's ranking supposedly has all teams linked and eliminates the initial weighting after about October 1.

Seems like they would prop them up for one last payday before they go.

I think you are underestimating the hate the rest of the Big12 have for Texas in particular. In fact, Texas named their conference season "embrace the hate"
