On November 3rd, 1990, Georgia Tech (7-0-1) traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia to take on undefeated #1 UVA for a prime time matchup on CBS. No Georgia Tech team had ever gone on the road to beat an undefeated #1 in the history of the program, not even under legendary coach Dodd. As if to add more pressure to the game then Head Coach Bobby Ross's father would be in attendance for the game for his first game back after a sextuple coronary bypass surgery seven months earlier.

Virginia took a quick lead to open the game, twice going up on the Jackets by two touchdowns. But an early fumble recovery for a touchdown in the second half put the momentum on Tech's side, and they fought back to tie the game late in the 4th. On the final drive, Jones would connect with Lester to put the ball on UVA's 20 yard line with 12 seconds left. Ross put the game on 19-year old kicker Scott Sisson for a final second field goal and the rest is, as they say, history.

The idea of Virginia being undefeated and ranked #1 seems like some kind of alternate universe these days.

Isn't it an alternate universe for all of the days?

What is even the biggest win of the Virginia football program?

What a day, what a day! Watched the game at a fraternity brother's house, and we were going crazy. This chick that I had been seeing came over, and she totally didn't get football. Don't think she was all that amused by a couple of crazed football fans.

In 1995 UVA was the first ACC school to beat FSU in their 4th year in the conference. It was a pretty big deal at the time. Not sure if it was their best.

The 90s under George Welsh was the best they've ever been.

We have had me damn rule around here.

Although Theta Chi women were kinda ugly, so never mind.

"We got the ball up to around the 40-yard line to open the second half and we ran an option play, and our right tackle [Paul Collins] stumbled and his foot came up and knocked the ball out of Shawn’s hand and Tech recovered. I still don’t know how it happened. Tech got the ball and they scored and that made a big difference.”

- George Welsh on Georgia Tech's fumble recovery to open the 2nd half

Greg Lester on the final pass to set up the kick from UVA's 20:

“That last pass, we had actually run it earlier. It’s called 8-13. I’d caught it on the sideline and went 20 yards. It’s designed for the slot guy to run a 5-yard out and the outside guy runs a curl. And (offensive coordinator Ralph) Friedgen, he was great at scheming and this time, he brought the outside receiver in motion, so we switched responsibilities. I pushed up about 12 yards and popped around, and I was wide open because everybody went with the out route.”

Scott Sisson on the game-winning field goal:

“I remember (line coach Pat) Watson trying to tell me a joke, and he got about two-thirds of the way through it and he just kind of looked at the other coaches and said, ‘Aww, just forget it. Go out and kick the ball.”

Nah, this was post graduation. And you are possibly correct, with a few exceptions.

I remember the Moore's being really good. They were really good. We beat them in the Sugar Bowl that year.

UVA was loaded but after our game they had some major injuries. I think they finished the year without their star qb.

I remember watching every edition of the local news for the entire weekend to see the highlights as many times as possible. What a time to be alive.
