3-star for the star people.
Tenuta, Gailey, and BJ love him
Consensus Top 20 player in Ohio
A tackling machine that loves to initiate contact.
130 tackles as a junior
6-0, 220, 4.6
300-lb bench and 500-lb squat
Kind of in the mold of KMike
Great academics
His father played for Stanford
Had offers from Nebraska, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Syracuse, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan State, Stanford, Purdue, Duke, etc.

This is a great pick-up and a pleasant surprise this afternoon. Machen is one that a thought that we would end up with, but I didn't expect it to be today. Machen plays extremely well and extremely tough between the tackles. He will probably need a red-shirt to hit the weights and improve is technique a little, but he will definitely be a contributor in the future.

he may redshirt....but not to hit the weights. He is built like a rock and already sports a 300+ bench and 500+ squat.

Based on the article posted he's already in the top 20 players in Ohio and may end up higher. I'd guess the only reason he might red shirt is if the depth chart dictates it.

I mean more to build out his frame than from a strength perspective. I ultimately see him playing the middle, but he does lack the ideal size for the position. Nevertheless, he is a wonderful get and I am ecstatic to have him.

Just remember that John Abbate lacked "ideal size" also. Didn't seem to bother him any!

Think OLB...like KMike Hall (who he is built like and runs like). BJ also played strong safety.

KMike is 6-0, 224 at the NFL combine.

BJ Machen is 6-0, 221 at the Scout combine...may get bigger.

Both run in the 4.6's.

He's a wlb.

I just worry a little about his side-line to side-line speed if playing the outside. It could just be in his technique; taking safe, rounded angles. He does seem to have really good closing speed and can definitely lay a lick. However, I would like to see him make tackles closer to the line of scrimmage, especially from the backside...But I guess that is what coaching is for and our coaches apparently do a phenominal job at developing players, especially Linebackers.

No offense Mustang, but this is what I find so hilarious about message boards. Now I don't know you or what your experience with football is. But on one hand we know he plays OLB. We know that he's ranked as the #17 OLB in the country by at least one of the services. We also know, or at least I think we know that our coaches have recruited him as an OLB. But you want him to play inside?

Again, no offense, and I know this is what message boards are for, and that it's all in fun. But I just don't get it sometimes.

Just an opinion...nothing more...nothing less ;)
