Wes discusses the closeness of the rivalry... Gailey agrees... but hopes its not this way this week... in Tech's favor of course..
Wes: Did Gailey get what he was looking for in terms of playing alot of people in the first two games?
Gailey: Yes, never thought we would have had that oppty to do that in the first two games, or at least to the degree we did... but it was very beneficial in terms of what they were looking to learn about personnel... commented that we covered up alot of the mistakes made thru team speed... feels better about the way our depth looks... more confidence in terms of what guys can do in certain situations..
Wes: AJ seems to look better as time goes... seems that AJ seems to be back in the game flow.
Gailey: Two biggest factors for QB is decision making and accuracy... noted we havent experienced two minute offense except in practice.. AJ has made good decisions on the field.. seems to be pleased with where the position stands with AJ at the helm....
Discussed third down conversions... Gailey noted the first team is almost 65% on 3rd down conversion rate.
Caller:Question about OL depth, what do we expect from Clemson
Gailey: Jeremy Philips is coming along ALOT faster than anyone imagined. If he had to go in the game right now, we would be OK... he is not 100%.. but is doing fine... the remainder of the second team is not in the full flow of things...
Expects Clemson to throw the football... line up in shotgun... Simmons will wheel and deal... great receivers... he expects them to throw it all over the field. We cant match up man to man on every down... will have to play some zone... and put pressure on Simmons.
Wes talks about our offensive stats... asks would we have thrown more if the games were closer... Gailey comments that if at the end of the year if the balance was 400 runs and 400 passes, he would be happy... wants to make sure we utilize all of our weapons... there may be games where we run more than pass, and vice versa...
Wes talks about pass defense efficiency... we are currently 2nd in the ACC with a rating of 89... Gailey notes that we gave up a ton of passing yardage last week in the second half against UCONN
Caller: Question about true freshmen... will any others see action this year.. or will they be red shirted...
Gailey: If he could he would red shirt all of them.. but its not realistic today in college football... he is very high on the freshman class as a group... feels we will see some future stars out of this class... Pullen, Cooper, and Brezina come to work everyday.... and will be great in the future..
Wes comments that most new coaches really need to rebuild from the ground up... Gailey is not in that situation... great players already on campus... experience laden...
Caller: (read from a message board) Braine hopes to schedule a team out West for an OOC game, what are his comments on this...
Gailey: Trying to get national games, TV wants this, fans want this... he would like to see us play someone out of Texas... or the Pac 10... he see us playing someone out of the Midwest as the years go on... wants to see us play a national game every year or two...games of this nature are more and more on the horizon... we want to appeal to every kid nationally, because that is our recruiting base... we are not just focused on the Southeast recruiting base...
Caller: Does he have a number in terms of the number of players he wants to play this weekend.
Gailey: There is a certain rotation already in place in certain areas... i.e. linebackers... etc.. there is no magic number he is looking for... he is not concerned about our conditioning... thinks we will be in good shape.. we will find out on Saturday...
Caller: How often does he read the Hive?
Gailey: Been on it one time (laughs)... more info on there than he wanted on there... so he has talked to some people about that... trying to make sure we have a little more control in terms of what is put out there... cited the fact Tech opponents have access too... doesnt want too much information to be available to them..
Caller: What about Bilbo.. his progression.. how will we use him on Saturday? Also, Jonathan Smith and Curry...
Gailey: He has made progress, but still needs to work hard..... but will not comment on how he will be used... will try to find a way to get him reps... maybe in another position at times... but will try to get him on the field... Jonathan Smith is coming along... needs to practice... Hope to have Curry back by the NC game....
Caller: What concerns him most defensively in terms of Clemsons offense..
Gailey: The size of their line... we have trouble matching up size wise... and the height of their receivers...
Caller: How is recruiting going, how many can we sign...
Gailey: We can sign 23-24 this year... all things seem to be going good thus far... but you never know until you get to signing day... but from all indications, things seem to be going well...
TOO MANY COMMERCIALS.... (What can Brown do for you?)
Gailey (Just talking with Wes):
Practice has looked good this week... the tempo has been good... the team understands the importance of this game... look for us to really focus on ball control on offense... anything to keep their offense off the field...
Tickets still remain for the BYU game...
Wes: Watch any pro football this weekend?
Gailey: In passing.. Clemson had his interest this past weekend... none of it seems to matter to him anymore...
Gailey.. if you cant get fired up for this game.. you are in the wrong business....
PS.. If there are others who listened, please post corrections due to misinterpretation, omissions, etc... will be much appreciated...
