thanks JGuy appreciate the recapp.

I listened to most of it and I dont know what I was expecting but it seemed little too "layed back."

Maybe it is just me but I feel a sense of urgency. Now this could be CG's media persona, however I hope he raised hell with the coaches after that lackluster performance.

I CANNOT imagine what will happen if we lose to BYU.

We have removed all the cushion for this year. I feel we have to win the next few or I will be seriously CONCERNED over our coaching staff.

I thought the same thing... at times he seemed a little too dismissive in terms of the problems... I would like to think this is just his "on-air" persona... and hope that some of the dismissiveness is due to the notion that he seems to like to keep his cards close to the vest...

I agree.. this weekend is big... I want us to win.. but more than that.. I want to see us execute, look sharp, stong fundementals, etc.. if we do that.. we will win...

Lawbee and Jacketguy. I'm not disagreeing with you at all, but could you elaborate about the "layed back" and "dimissivemess."

The show sounded the same as it always does with Coach reflecting he hates to lose and all Ls hurt, but it's time to move on and prepare for BYU.

As far as problems go......the average fan doesn't have a clue. I don't mean that ugly, but most fans are not true football people and don't know a lot. If they did they'd be coaching.

Felt he answered the question honestly.

I don't see the correlation between the fire or calmness of a coach on a call in show after a L with the fire and resolve of a coach towards his coaching staff and players.

I don't know how much time you two have spent with Coach Gailey, the staff, and the players on the practice field or in person. Can get a better feel for what goes on when you do.

The bottom line is we need to WIN!

GTT.. you make good points.. and it may be nothing more than myself feeling a little less confident after a loss...

but, an example would be the way he answered the question concerning getting plays to the huddle.. offensive philosophy etc... I think I would have much rather have hear him say...yeah, I didnt like some of those things either... and we have been working hard on it this week...etc..

maybe its just that I am too accustomed to hearing a growl... or maybe its just that I would like to hear a little more urgency in his voice... but all of that is really picky stuff...

I believe that his soft spokenness is why he seems laid back. I've never heard Dodd speak, but this manner is why he was compared to Dodd by Braine(not by his coaching, as some have interpreted). Was Dodd a laid back and polite person?

Anyways, I believe that Gailey was laid back and relaxed in order to show people that there isn't a sense of urgency. We knew we weren't going undefeated this year. Losses have to happen. I just think that Gailey was trying to let people know that he and the team aren't panicked. They are relaxed, and ready to get on with the next game. I hope that's it, at least.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">I disagree. When I see posts on this board that have common themes and then I hear former coaches echo those same themes I think it is cop out to say "fans just dont understand."

Bob Davey use to say the same thing in ND and I think we are seeing otherwise this year.

There were MAJOR problems in that clempson game. Now if it was many (weather, new qb, banged up D,...) little fixable problems that made it seem major or whether it was REAL problems only time will tell.

Do not underestimate the knowledge of the average poster. This board just picked up a 4th round draft pick and his complaints seemed pretty similar to all us "average fans."

We will find out MUCH after saturday. If we lose that one then we have SERIOUS problems, IMO.

j-guy,
Thanks for the great effort on the call in show transcript.

With Buck, it is not a sense of urgency....it is no sense/no urgency. He acts like he doesn't have a clue....just reading the script.
Hope all you Braine arse-kissers are happy the next 3-5 years as TECH football slides down the B*** L**** slope.

I met Dodd many years ago and yes he was laid back but you could tell that he had the air of authority about him and that what he said went. Is CG like that only time will tell but from reading the above report I would have liked to hear him say that he takes responsibility for some of the Crap I saw on the tube out in San Antonio last Saturday.

Law-bee, I agree. I think there is a lot of savy on both boards regarding our football team. Being a football player (even and All-American or Heisman winner) does not make a player a good coach. There are many people who have never played a game of football that could be a good coach.

It is like every thing else in life, you learn by making a thorough study of a subject, on hands training, or serious observing. Yes, it helps to have played the game, but it is not a requirement.

How many on the board think they could have done a better job than Bill Lewis? Probably a lot of people! There are people that have never performed a particular job that could do it much better than some persons presently performing that same job.

How many times have you corrected problems left by professional electricians, plumbers, builders, etc. on your own house, and you are not even in that business. Just because you "are one" does not mean you know what you are doing.

The smart coach is one who looks at all suggestions and criticism with an eye toward improving his own expertise. No one person has all the answers.

Jacketguy and Law. I hear ya! I'm not disagreeing. There are a lot of fans on both boards that I don't feel are "average."

I don't disagree at all that there were problems at CU. I don't think the coaches feel that there weren't either. Jacketguy answered my question, and I better understand where he is coming from. I need to listen to the audio on the call in show again. Sometimes it's hard to get a good feel when you're doing other things at the same time. That was my main reason for the question.

I don't know as though the majority of posters on these boards are a good representation of GT fans in general. Everyone here really burns and keeps up with the team a lot closer than the average fan I'd think.

The average GT fan and listener to the call in show could be a lot different than the average poster here or the Hive.

Thanks, JacketGuy, great report!

I remember hearing Bobby Dodd speak on air (I never met him; I envy you, old foggy) and he always sounded not just laid back but downright at peace with the world. It suits me fine for CG to be calm. The Clemson game IS over.

I'm a college football fan; I pull for Ga Tech; I feel awful when we lose, but I'm back again the next week. Gailey is our coach, so I will support him for WAY longer than 3 games.

Now, of course, if he starts having the boys play volleyball to prepare for bowl games....

Did you ever listen to an O'Leary call in show?

Caller: Coach O'Leary I notice in the NC State game that we did not substitute in the first half and we look tired in the second half

George: I've talked to Ralph and Ted about playing more players ..I'll bring that up with them again Duh whose the head coach?

Its Coach Speak. Not one coach in Division 1 would do the call in show if it was not in there contract. They all hate the thing .......listening to a bunch of Monday morning quarterbacks most who have never played football above the midget league level telling them how to coach.

My contribution for the week...

Enjoy !!

Wes talks about the Clemson loss..

Gailey... all are disappointed and hurt about the loss... but you cant let one loss turn into two... we have to get prepared for the next game... put this one behind us... there is alot of football left to play

Wes: Did last Sat boil down to 6 plays...

Gailey: Yes... penalities... lot of ifs... Gailey learned that our team has alot of resolve... they came back from 18 points back... didnt quit... we paid the price of not having played a full game before that game (starters)... that was the first time we had worked a two minute drill in the rain... and it showed...

Caller: Asks about the mental penalties... or complains about them.. Was there any hanging heads this week at practice...

Gailey:He agrees... stresses that they have to realize that one play in the first quarter can affect the outcome of the game... they are all important.. we will get smacked in the face if we arent ready this week... if we sit around and worry about last week too long... we will pay a price... our guys have responded pretty well.. practice has been pretty good this week...

Wes: Talks about Nevada and BYU

Gailey: Nevada did a nice job... took advantage of opportunities.... we didnt do that last week against Clemson...

Morehouse will be punting this week... BYU's punting team is very impressive... Gailey says they are trying to give either Morehouse or Dan Dyke the oppty to win the job... but both seem to be equal right now...

Adjustments have been made in personnel in terms of special teams... did not go into specifics...

Caller: Offensive questions... seems to be a problem with getting the plays into the huddle... have we been working on that... looking crisper... secondly... can he comment on the offensive philosophy... especially going deep on 2nd down..

Gailey: Sometimes formations are wrong... communication is broken down... sometimes this happens with a new QB... everything was a little harder last week... we havent really had delays.. it is closer than he likes, but not a big problem yet... we are not a checkoff team... in terms of the long passes on 2nd and 1... we may have taken more chances than we should instead of sustaining drives... we didnt execute well on 3rd (sacks)

Caller: Comments about the playcalling... thought we would go in a little more wide open... didnt see alot of that... it seems we havent shown much in the first 3 games... also, the tempo of the game... from what he hears etc... the tempo was vey slow.. we were behind most of the game... we didnt seem to do this, even tho we were behind...

Gailey: What was the question? Tempo of the game or open offense? Didnt want to get too crazy with the game plan... taking steps a game at a time... still searching for answers.. (example -fullback position !!) The tempo... we just go at our pace there... we dont try to speed up or slow down.. we are trying to execute

Caller: Are we going to be seeing more of the option?

Gailey: Yes.. will see much more of that.. not in every game... but we will run it alot in some... last week we didnt due to the weather and some personnl issues ...

Caller:Are we thin in the secondary? Is is possible to redshirt Gathers this year.. .

Gailey: We are... Ruebin was hurt... and we are thin in the secondary.. in terms of experienced players... the problem with our nickel coverage last week was letting Simmons out of the pocket.. we didnt get the pass rush we needed last week.. Ruebin is healthy this week.... Gathers is not able to do the things he was able to do before.. some of its mental... some of it physical... is it a possiblity to redshirt.. yes... Gathers does not want to do that... he feels he can go on and have a good year as a Senior... they have talked extensivly about this... his play will be limited right now... if he plays in the 4th ball game.. that ends the red shirt option.. Gathers feels alot better this week as opposed to last...

Caller: What personnel changes will we see on defense... and what about I-Perfection

Gailey: Will probably redshirt I-Perfection.. that is the hope anyway... really cant talk about personnel changes on the air... wants to keep them under wraps.. wont be major changes... but moreso package changes... subtle changes on both defense and special teams..

Caller: Has he considered shifting some of the LB talent elsewhere, for instance the secondary?
Gailey: Talked about Key Fox at end sometimes for pass rush... the guy that would have the best chance to move from LB to secondary is Sterling Green.. who is ineligible this year...

Talked about Albert Poree... Gailey stresses that it wasnt just one play.. it was a series of factors that led up to it (being demoted to the scout team) ... they felt he needed some work with the scout team... Gailey tried to talk him out of quitting... but Poree didnt want to go back to the scout team...

Talked about the progress Landry has made as well as James Butler... both have ability... just no experience... we may have to use them before its over with..

Caller: Glad we didnt quit after getting down by 18... did he have a question about that (heart of the team) and did he feel good about that now..

Gailey: You never feel good about a loss... but was proud about the way our guys fought back... likes what he saw about the team from that perspective... but there is also the areas of improving execution.. being mentally sharp... etc.. we have to improve...

Clinkscale got banged up last week... Ford is out.. they think Ace can be a fullback/tailback combination guy as we move forward...

Wes: what about #89 at fullback?

Gailey: He gives us a bigger body (dont expect him to run with the ball).. we are looking for bigger bodies to block for Hollings...

Wes talks about BYU.. notes the positives of BYU

Gailey: They want you to think pass pass pass.. then they run it down your throat... they are a little bit of a mirror image of us... they are men.. 25-26 year old guys... they are big.. and physical... they have a LB that is 6-5 250... our speed will have to win this ball game...

Caller: Question about DL and LB not using their hands to get off blocks.. seems we were "stuck" in blocks against Clemson

Gailey: We are working on that, we work on it every day ... what looked bad the other day was not keeping contain on the QB... we cant get locked in on the inside...

talked about the diffeneces of the two BYU QB's.. one is more of a passer .. the other will run the option... both are very good....

Caller: OL question... we gave up 6 or 7 sacks or tackles for a loss.. question is are we getting beat more by man on man.. or missed assignements..

Gailey:probably half and half... some just got beat.. some missed assignments.. but its about half... not quite as many missed assignments as it seems...

our rushing offense and our rushing defense will be a key to the game this week against BYU...
