Did we just "Clemson," according to Clemson's definition of the term? (Win one you shouldn't, lose one you shouldn't, or whatever.) Ugh.
What was UVA thinking on that onside kick? It was really strange looking. Looked like a punt where the receiving team was staying away from it and the kicking team was letting it roll dead. Maybe UVA didn't realize it was a live ball, or that they could touch it before it went 10 yards? Seemed like Butker didn't hit it very well, but it still worked out for us.
It seemed like we had some personnel mismatches on that last drive. Skov was presumably in for pass blocking, but he was still favoring his shoulder - is 1 armed Skov really still better than M. Marshall at pass blocking? When we did decide to run the ball, we had Skov at B-back, and the run went as you would expect it to.
Right before we wasted our last time out, I observed that Lynch wasn't on the field even though he's probably the most reliable A-back and a decent receiver. Did we screw ourselves by trying to sub him in? It looked like we tried to huddle up and substitute (after being in the no-huddle) and that's why we ran out of time and had to take the time out, but I was watching in the stadium and haven't rewatched.
This was the worst crowd I've ever seen at UVA, I think. It was pretty sparse and dead. The announcer kept going "that's another Virginia...!" and the crowd refused to respond with "First Down" (until they started running it down our throats late), so it was pretty weird and awkward.
It was a very frustrating game to watch. Gotsis going out on the first play set the tone. Toss on the ground and fumble within our first 3 or 4 plays also set the tone. It just got more miserable from there - we never got into any kind of rhythm offensively. There was one play late where JT got sacked, and there were 5 UVA guys standing around him within no more than 2 seconds after the snap.
Our injury situation is ridiculous. Against FSU, it seemed like we were going to run out of DBs. Against UVA, it seemed like we were going to run out of OLs late. I've never seen an injury season this bad.
I dared to hope that we'd turned the corner against FSU, that the early season struggles were injuries and young guys learning the system, and that we'd be OK the rest of the way, but this was a really discouraging game. I know we struggle at UVA even at the best of times, but losing to a 2-win team was kind of a "maybe we're not going to get any better this year" wake up call.
