Watching the season unfold in this manner has certainly been disappointing. I was hopeful that by year 3 we would be able to turn the corner and make it to a bowl game. That said, I don't think all is lost. There have been some positives to go along with the negatives.

Overall performance
Year 1: Rough transition year. We were completely outmatched in most games.
Year 2: Showed signs of life here and there, getting pushed around a bit less. Incremental progress from year 1.
Year 3: Physically matching up with most opponents for the first time in CGC's tenure, but unable to find the W's.

Offense
Year 1: Ouch. This was tough to watch.
Year 2: Started pulling things together a bit. Still a poor offense, but showed flashes of hope.
Year 3: Really good at times, but inconsistent. Steady improvement from year 2.

Defense
Year 1: Played with aggression but were seriously outmanned in the front 7.
Year 2: Improved strength was offset by lack of quickness. Frustrating defense to watch - even when in position, would lost the matchups.
Year 3: Match up better physically than in year 1 or 2, particularly in the front 7, but often out of position. Lots of head-scratchers leading to very poor play overall.

Special Teams
Year 1: Put the "special" in special teams
Year 2: Harvin was fun to watch, punt coverage was improved. Don't ask about the FG's or kickoffs.
Year 3: Great strides made. Losing Harvin hurt, but every other phase of the game has improved.

When looking through this lens, I can see why we have been a lot more competitive this year than in the past. Continued improvement in offense and on special teams has kept us in games, while defense, poor game-day coaching, and offensive inconsistency has kept us from turning the corner. In 2 out of 3 phases I can say that I am comfortable with our progression.

Defense, on the other hand, seems to be regressing despite obvious improvement in talent level (particularly on the front 7). Linebacker play has been a bright spot from year 1 to year 3, and while young and still undersized, I have been pleasantly surprised by improvements on the D line. With the guys on the roster improving at their current place and with the studs coming in 2022, I am confident in our front 7's progression. Secondary play and overall cohesiveness on Defense is the one area that has not shown improvement from year to year. O line is a close second, but I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt for 1 more year given the length of time it takes to get a HS player ready to compete in FBS trenches physically and mentally.

Oh, and a post on this team would be incomplete without saying what a phenomenal job CTC has done with the RB room. Continued improvement, increased talent, and increased depth have all been created. Any of our top 4 guys could start for most teams in the ACC, and that's a huge testament to coach Choice. Watching Gibbs late this season has been a treat, not only because of his phenomenal talent, but because of the improvements he has made in pass pro, vision, and getting N/S vs E/W - all signs of great coaching and hard work. I hope we get to see CTC on the staff for a long time - he's certainly going to have opportunities elsewhere if he wants them.

That’s all feel-good and pat yourself on the back type stuff, which is nice. It, however, isn’t converting to wins and that’s really all that matters. Will it be year 5 or 6 for Collins to put forward a team that can actually win 6 games and get us back to a bowl game? Would anyone ever think waiting that long is acceptable?

We have good running backs.
Are special teams really better? Gibbs is dangerous running back kicks. That much is a given. And we're good at onside kicks. But our best kicker in America clanked one off the stick yesterday. I'm not sold at all on the new punter. Our punt return game is ... well, there isn't one.
At least we're consistent about putting kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.
Yates at QB I think helps the defense. He's better at sustained possessions. And the longer the defense is on the sidelines, the better.
I got nothing positive for the defense. Nothing. Ivey, I think, can be a a top notch defensive end by the time he's done. But right now, he's saddled with some really bad coaching around him
Yeah, that's about all the positives I can drum up.

I'm also positive that Collins is as bad a gameday coach as Georgia Tech has ever had. I also wonder what in hell the team does in practice to get ready for the opposition.

For special teams, its better cause aside from Harvin there was no where to go but up. At least now kickoffs have some positives. For punt returns, have to force punts first.

we were making PATs and FGs once Wells got the job. I still cringe when we try a FG these days.
PJ's teams also were good at blocking kicks.
The two KOR TDs by USF are always gonna stand out - and they should - but I'm not sold on a wholesale ST improvement.

WE have one game in 3 yrs that we can "be really proud of" ,unc this yr.-- vs how many punts?

if covid didn’t happen, we would have had more wins last year season than we do this season. Change my mind.

I think that's a fair assessment, but the lack of cohesion on defense in particular is sufficient for me to say that this staff may never get there and, at a minimum, is taking too long to get to mediocre to build confidence in their ability.

Year 1 3 wins
Year 2 3 wins
Year 3 3 wins

Thank goodness for Co-vid. It has served as a reliable excuse for many things across the spectrum.

I'd have taken a ööööty season and no covid BS for the real world. Even if you try to blame covid for the second year woes there's no excuse for another 3 win season. I would have taken 5 wins as progress and I do realize we have lost a lot of close games, but seeing this crappy defensive performance week in and week out gives me no optimism for that side of the ball.

Maybe, but probably not, but it's all guess and conjecture. So, here goes.

In the original 2020 12 game schedule Tech would have played 6 of the teams that were actually played in 2020. Central Florida, Notre Dame, Clemson, Pittsburgh, Duke and Syracuse. Tech was 1-5 vs. these in 2020 and I believe that it's a safe assumption that had there been a non-Covid season the results would have been identical, a win over Duke and 5 other losses.

The other 6 teams on the original 2020 schedule were Virginia (5-5), Virginia Tech (6-5), Miami (7-2), North Carolina (8-4), Gardner Webb (2-2 Spring 2021), and Georgia (8-2). Based upon those teams 2020 records I could see a win vs. Gardner Webb and possibly one vs. Virginia. So, Tech record in a "non-Covid 2020" would have been 3-9, or 2-10.

There are all kinds of coaches. Some coaches, Bobby Dodd for example, pretty much turned over the offense and defense to coordinators. It's not clear to me yet what Collins is doing here. I think he has done that except he has a head set on for both now. I don't blame him for being more involved, but it is not totally clear who is doing what.

"When looking through this lens . . . "

Your lens is clearly cracked and distorting everything you see.

Our defense has 3 interceptions on the season.

For reference Iowa leads FBS with 19 INTs

Rock bottom you ask? That would be NIU with 1 INT.

So we have equal amount of wins and INTs.
