As a BYU fan on your board visiting I want to wish all you Georgia Tech fans the best in your upcoming season and hope your football team does wonderfully after the game on Thursday. There is a lot to be hopeful for with a great coaching staff and great young talent.

There is something special about the start of the new season for us here at BYU since we had a disastrous season last year. So many things went wrong from key injuries on the line to QB's with all kinds of potential that faded into nothing. Playing against Georgia Tech is a real honor since you all have such a storied program and I really wish this could be an ongoing thing. Perhaps not every year but one that happens periodically.

As far as the area goes I think you won’t find a nicer place to play an away game. For the most part the BYU fans will treat you well (and we wish many of you could come and visit). The stadium is immaculate and the prices very reasonable to enjoy a night at watching some good football. There is actually a lot to see and do around Provo this time of year. We have great hiking and plenty of natural beauty to enjoy. Without trying to sound like a member of the chamber of commerce (I am not by the way! LOL!) we have great fly fishing up Provo River.

As far as the two teams go I think there are several reasons why BYU will win this game and why I think the official Las Vegas spread of 3.5 points is correct. These reasons are 1. a better offensive line at this stage of the season in relation to your defensive line 2. a confusing defensive scheme that returns good talent at every position and 3. running backs that are healthy and consistently solid players.

1. While there are at least two red shirt freshmen that will start on the O-line it is not like they are greenhorns. They are strong and athletic and highly recruited by teams such as Nebraska and Washington. The 0-line is massive averaging over 300 pounds and very quick for their size. It is my understanding that Ga Tech's defensive line is thin at the moment and very young.

2. Bronco Mendenhall is the new defensive coordinator and installs a system of defense known as the 3-3-5. In the pros it is the "zone blitz" scheme in rough terms. Strictly going to the numbers, New Mexico (which Coach Mendenhall ran last year which by many observations had inferior talent to this year's BYU squad) lead the conference in the following categories: rush defense, first down conversion percentage, average yards per run defense, and 3rd down conversion defense. What seemed to be the thing that beat New Mexico last year were teams with a great passing attack. New Mexico, while really good at stopping the run (surprisingly in my opinion considering the fact that they had so many players off the ball and out of the 'box'), was porous at pass defense. I think the reason is in the O-line's inability to key off who they are blocking until a moment before the play starts. With the most talented cornerbacks in Gilford and Heany your receivers and freshman QB will have to lock-in early and often to make yardage and points. On BYU we have four legitimate play makers in Brady Poppinga (DE who lead the conference in sacks), Jenaro Gilford (injured last season by was all conference the year before as a soph), Aaron Francisco (a huge hitting free safety), and Colby Buckwoldt (who seems to just have that nose for the ball and for a linebacker has 4.5 speed).

3. Marcus Whalen healthy is a superior running back that can dominate a game. He has the north-south running style that will take advantage of a huge o-line that will go right-at-you at times. He is not a flashy runner but more of a 'mudder' that gets tremendous leg movement through holes and tough to bring down with arm tackles. There is a quorum of highly talent 'scat back' types that will kill you with speed and moves behind Whalen. Basically, Whalen will have to be stopped by your safeties and linebackers stacking the box and hoping that Berry wont be able to 'hook-up' with receivers like Toby Christensen, Wilkerson, Kukahiko, and TE Coats.

Keys to your victory and conversely to BYU's victory are:

Georgia Tech wins if:
-Whalen is contained to less than 100 yards
-Ball can pass consistently (not talking about big plays but more like drive sustaining passing. The stat to look for is third down conversions and completion percentage.
-Rushing yards over 200 for the game.
-Score early and often. Dont expect to win a game late in the altitude and against a kicker like Matt Payne.
-turnover, turnovers, turnovers! (LOL)

BYU wins if:
-Whalen has a great game (150+ rushing yards)
-Berry gets over 300 yards.
-is leading at the start of the fourth quarter.

Anyway, take care and as I said earlier I wish you all the best and I am so happy that the two schools can play and make the College Football season that much special.

Good post Dean. I'm excited to see a good, clean, and well-executed game to start the season.

I think this optimistic BYU fan isn't looking at the reason by CBS Sports predicts an 8 point victory by Georgia Tech and that's Reggie Ball. While in other posts I tend think BYU has a lot of advantages, BALL is a questionmark for BYU's newly installed 3-3-5 defense.

I do think if there was ever a defensive scheme to use against a guy like BALL it would be BYU's and that may spell trouble for TECH in later games if BYU is successful. Nevertheless, BALL is precisely the type of dangerous quarterback BYU has had trouble with in the past. We'll see what BYU can do to stop him. I am not sure they can.

All I can go by is what I read about Ball and he sounds like he will be a great QB once he gets the experience he needs. That being said I think any new QB facing a "gimicky" defense like the 3-3-5 will be confused. Ball by all accounts is a running QB and if he is contained on the line then he must rely on passing. The 4-3 I think would have been a better scheme for him to go against and I dont feel any true freshman has a chance at a new defense like BYU. All of this is speculation.

As far as lines go my thoughts are go with the line where there is money involved

CBS Sports Line is inferior (with all due respect) to anything casinos use for betting in the sportbooks. A few years ago BYU was favored in beating a team by 48.5 points in one of the official Vegas lines. BYU ended up beating them by 49. At the time I thought "how in the heck could anyone figure out to 48.5 points in a line". Those guys dont mess around with numbers however. I predict BYU 21 to 17 over Georgia Tech.

Thanks Dean. We will have to agree to disagree re: the game.

I am heading out to Provo on wednesday with clubs in tow. Can you reccommend a place to play close to Provo ( I will be cabbing it) on Thursday morning? I found a course called Hobble Creek in Springville. Is there a better bet?

Thanks for the post Dean. It is nice to get some background info on BYU. It is definately going to be an interesting game. Can a freshman QB make the reads against a blitzing defense and can a new scheme stiffen up a BYU unit that looks to have struggled mightily with the run last year?

Thanks for the post, Dean I think the following will happen:

Georgia Tech wins if:
-Whalen is contained to less than 100 yards
-Ball can pass consistently (not talking about big plays but more like drive sustaining passing. The stat to look for is third down conversions and completion percentage.
-Rushing yards over 200 for the game.
-Score early and often.

Hi Dean

Thanks for your note. I would have to say the BYU fans I met last year in Atlanta were just about the nicest opposing team fans I have ever met. Good luck to you and your team and best of luck after Thursday!

OK, I guess it is good to have one game with a bunch of foreigners and have a genteel spirit. But after we raise the GT flag over Provo, let's get back to THE SOUTH because we have some major trash talkin comin up with Awbarn, FSU(FL ST UNIV for the criminally insane), and Clemp-sun. GO YOU FREAKIN JACKETS!! IT'S TIME TO RUMBLE BOYS!!!!

Now I feel better.

To LLCoolJacket:

You have picked one of the best courses in the state in Hobble Creek Golf course. It is my favorite and I play a lot of golf in Florida, Hawaii, and California (where I am originally from). Hobble Creek wont 'wow' you with the shack of a clubhouse but the fairways are gorgeous! In a few weeks the trees and brush will turn red-orange and mix that with the green of the course and the mountains that butt right up against the course and it is heaven on earth. That is until the second and third hole when you have double water hazards criss-crossing the fairway. If you are a sub-250 yard hitter than play it short and save your balls

Thanks Dean. I'm hoping the thin air will give me an ego boost off the tee!

Go Jackets, bust their ass!! (Can't be too friendly with the "enemy" ya know)

What is a "gimicky" defense? If it works, stops teams cold, then great, be gimicky! My take is that Joe Lee Dunn's defensive scheme is simply aggressive and attacking. It's designed to confuse the offense. I would think those are pretty good battle tactics and doubt there is a single cadet on campus that would argue against using what works. Just a thought!

Actually with TECH's personnel, it would have been an exceptional defense to have installed here. It's well suited to the types of athletes TECH recruits. Before we simply put it down or call it something with implied negativity, maybe we should have considered ways it could have helped TECH this thin-depth year.

Great post, DeanH and you sound like a very nice guy. I'm going to post the reasons I think that Tech will win the game by 11 points.

1. Although the 3-3-5 is a "gimmicky" defense and has yielded great results against the run in the past, I believe that Tech's HUGE, veteran offensive line will be able to blow off the ball and control your defensive ends and linebackers in the middle. I predict that Tech will run the ball between the tackles early and often and most of the time will get 3 - 5 yards.
2. Don't be fooled by the fact that since Reggie Ball runs a true 4.4 40 he is a running quarterback. I read a story by his high school coach just moments ago in which his coach stated that Ball was the most accurate passer not only that he had ever coached, but that he had ever witnessed in person. Also, I have read numerous posts online that he throws the deep ball extremely accurately. Expect Tech to stretch the defense very early.
3. You are absolutely correct that Tech's defensive line is thin and thin

(ie undersized a bit). However, we have 3 linebackers that I will match against any in the country and you can expect them to play tight in the box to aid that young line. I think that your back will occasionally break a run from 10-20 yards, but I think that you're going to find that this Tech team is the fastest team that they have fielded in the last 15 years. As Jimmy Johnson said when he was at Miami, "Speed doesn't have a slump!"

Other than that, we wish your team well against every other team but Tech. GO JACKETS!

Just a quick thought... BYU and GT have similar front 7 looks sizewise; and BYU's linebackers are every bit as big and fast. I would think that if GT plans to use it's smallish defensive line to stop BYU's big powerful line, then ther reverse is true.

Wouldn't BYU's linebackers be doing essentially the same thing as TECH's. You might be right about TECH blowing BYU off the line for 3-5 yards in a conventional straight up defense, but in the 3-3-5, the players line up in the slots forcing the lineman to trap. That's great if the mike-backer misses the trapped hole. But BYU's Mike Tanner started the last four games a year ago and was very adept at plugging the trap. He wasn't the best tackler in my opinion but that has probably been drilled into him by his new coach. You might be right, but you might also find the 3-3-5 a lot tougher to control at scrimmage than you think. One of the things it does is turns your own strength (size) into a weakness by getting it off-balanced and out of poisition. If nothing else, it will be interesting to watch and learn. All this talk of it should be fun. South Carolina and MSU have been using it for years. It takes very smart athletes who can learn and drill technique.

No matter what, it's fall, football is here, have a wrambling bunch of fun tonight. Respect the team you beat or lose to no matter what! That's what I always say.

I hope after this game no matter what happens there is as good analysis as there was pre-game. Also, I want to hear how the GT fans that went to the game liked the stadium and any other activities they participated in like golfing, etc around Provo.
