Fellow Jackets, our boys need each and every single one of us this Saturday. They not only need us to be inside BDS, they will need our undying support, our voices of encouragement, and our shouts of "DEFENSE"!
This game is obviously big. Heck, every game is big. But this one represents a challenge that will prepare us well should we have ANY ambition of finishing in the top 3 teams of the ACC this year.
A look at our opponent.
Here comes BYU (2-1). The Cougars got national respect a week ago and took a top 25 ranking into Reno, Nevado only to get upset. Don't be fooled. BYU is still an excellent team capable of handing our "arses" to us this Saturday.
The Cougars have two very capable QB's in "the thrower" Bret Engemann (62-116, 53%, 692 yds) and "the runner" Pendleton. Pendleton runs the option very well and is used in short yardage situations. He also is 14-22 so Crowton and staff aren't shy about letting him toss a few just to keep the "D" honest.
We all appreciate Hollings who is currently ranked 5th among D1 backs (148 per game, 8 TD's). However, we shouldn't overlook BYU's own Marcus Whalen. Whalen already has 63 carries for 416 yds. (138 yds per game) His linemen average 6'5, 308 lbs and will represent a preview similar to what FSU's O-Line will bring in here later in the year.
BYU is DEADLY at the receiver position. The Cougars already have 12 different players with at least one catch, 5 different players with a reception for a TD, and 4 different players who already have over 100 yds receiving. The leader of this group is standout Reno Mahe with 16 catches for 159 yds. The ironic twist is that he's yet to score a TD but this is certain to change in the near future. On the other side of the field is Rodney Wilkerson with 12 catches for 120. HOWEVER, (AND REMEMBER I SAID IT HERE FIRST) the most dangerous player for the Jackets to defend this week is #89, TE Spencer Nead. You think Jeremy Shockey is a load? Folks wait until you see this guy catch a ball on a waggle route with only the defensive secondary left to get by. We MUST NOT give this guy a chance to catch the ball or we are in SERIOUS DANGER.
Overall, BYU has 1365 yards of offense in 3 games. (455 yd avg) They most certainly will move the ball at BDS which is why our men need your support.
The downside to BYU is their "dumb" mistakes. The Cougars have committed 37 penalties in 3 games. They are prone to shooting themselves in the foot and in last week's loss to Nevada really did themselves in by mistakes.
Finally, you can forget all thoughts of a shutout! BYU has a "scoring" streak of 341 straight ballgames dating back to Sept 27th, 1975 vs Arizona State.
We'll see (and hopefully HEAR) you guys on Saturday!
Go Jackets!
