I will be honest that I have no clue what the atmosphere was like playing AU (started GT in 90). I know it was a HUGE rivalry, but what was gameday like?

Is there anything that you could compare it to today? I have some nice Auburn friends, but the friendly trash talk has already started.

I have always liked Auburn. When I played Rugby for Tech, I always loved going down to AU to play them. They were nice people, but competitive in a good way. I was in NROTC too, and I used to go down there for their drill competition. I won a few 1st place trophies for Tech, but they still invited us to stay each time for the night and party with them. A bunch of class people IMHO. They have some nice women too.

Being a 21 year season ticket holder, i think i can comment on this one. I drove down to Auburn for the '82, '84, and '86 games. The rivalry was bigger than the Climpsun and F$U games of today, and slightly less than the UGAg game. GT should put Auburn back on the schedule permanently as an opener game every year IMHO. UT game used to be pretty big, too.

Ditto what FHstinger said. Auburn is TECH's oldest rivalry. We hung on to them and UT after we left the SEC and continued to play them every year, home and away, until we "had" to drop them to play a mandated ACC schedule. The current Awbun crowd is probably a little removed from the rivalry but the tradition is still there and could be easily revived. I wish we would, and UT, too, rather than playing the patsies but I guess they'd have to be interested too. By the by, the road games to Auburn and TN are super. Where's the salesmanship, Dave?

I have been watching this rivalry since the mid-forties and this is one game that should be played each year
despite the two teams being in different conferences. The atmosphere is just as intense as the UGA game but a lot more civil. This has always been a barnburner and I expect it always will be. I really miss this game and wish it could be renewed permanently. It would be a sellout even if it was played in the middle of a desert.

Tech was a huge game for Auburn. They used to have a Wreck Tech parade and everything. I've never seen a drunker crowd in my life than Auburn fans and plenty of trailer park alum types. However, there were some classy Auburn folks too.

My first Auburn-Tech game was 1971 I think, sitting behind us but near us were 2 of the most obnoxious Auburn drunks I've ever seen. Sitting right in front of them and immediately behind us were a classy family bunch from Auburn, each guy wearing a coat and tie and Mom in her Sunday best. The drunks spilled drinks on the family and the old man got the cops and had them thrown out. I've never heard such whining in all my life as these 2 drunks talking about these War Eagle traitors. We lost the game.

Damn, RW1, sounds like about every game I've ever been to. I remember the Auburn tailgate contingent up around the Varsity. They always brought a big crowd.

Best Tech rival...period.
Can't forget the time Tech freshmen chased Aubie the Tiger across the field during pre-game and finally caught him at the 30 or so yardline, and then pulled off his tail! Our President had to apologize for that one! I would trade our UGA game for Auburn right now. UGA has gotten too ugly. Auburn people are by far a better breed, and their campus is just as close.

Ghost, I remember them chasing down the Clemson Tiger one year and pulling his tail off. Next game a BDS Clemson surrounded the Tiger with their JV footballers and despite many brave efforts by rat cappers the tail stayed intact.

Of course, it could have happened to both Tigers...

I was in school when TECH played Auburn yearly. That makes me an old timer. Hence, I have an opinion to share: schedule them every year. Its a great rivalry, and the intensity is UGAG without the hatred as another poster noted.

My memory is faded, but I believe I am correct about my freshman year in '78; TECH beats Auburn soundly, including a halfbacck option pass from ELI to Drew Hill, or vice versa. Could someone verify this for me?

I vaguely remember listening to the '78 Auburn game on the radio. TECH won 24-10. Little did one know at the time it would be our last victory over AU. GT lost the next nine in row, and then dropped AU from the schedule out of frustration(said it was to make room for "mighty" Maryland & South Carolina to complete our ACC schedule). That i can remember all this will attest to the intense rivalry.

I'm of the opinion that Auburn should be a regular opponent for us again. But I can understand those that don't want to play them every year either.

I was in school when the rivalry ended in '87 and we damn near beat them that year. At that time, we were playing Auburn, UT, and UGA every year...plus the ACC schedule. We had to add Maryland, so the decision at the time was to rotate in SC with Auburn and UT. I have to admit that playing Auburn, UT and UGA plus the ACC schedule makes our schedule too difficult.

OTOH, we should not have completely dropped Auburn. We should have at least kept playing them intermittently. Since we dropped them, we've had our ups and downs, but so has Auburn. I think their streak of victories over us would have ended.

The game next year should be tough, but a great way to start the season.

Thanks for all the great info! I can't wait for opening day next year, regardless who the coach or quarteback is.

This is the kind of rivalry game I wish we had more of.
