What metrics do you think Key needs to hit in order to win COTY honors?

Play in the Championship Game?
8 wins?

The previous clown show should provide a good comparison target for Key to look good against.

Elko won last year with 9 wins. I think Key definitely wins with Tech at 9-4
The folks I know at Duke rave about Elko. They say he is a tremendous guy and has an IQ of about 180.

Key would need 9-3 at the least. He's going from 5-7 (and if he goes 9-3, he should be CotY). Elko took a team that went from 2-9 and 3-9 the previous two years to 9-3.
If Norvell goes 11-1 or 12-0, he might beat out a 9-3 Key.

IMO, Duke's season is going to hinge on 2 things. QB and OL health. Leonard is a good QB but they have redshirt freshman who played in 1 game last year and 3 true freshmen behind him. Same with OL, their starters are all upperclassmen and experienced, but after that they have a bunch of grad transfers from small schools and freshmen. Lose a couple OL or starting QB, I don't know if Elko's coaching can overcome that.

Schedule strength adds some context to respective 2022 seasons. Both teams were 3-2 against common division opponents. Tech beat Duke head to head. The other 6 games comprising the rest of their schedules:

Duke, 5-1
@Northwestern
@Kansas
Temple
NC A&T
WF
@BC

Tech, 1-5
1-5
@UGA
Ole Miss
@UCF
Western Carolina
Clemson
@FSU

Duke probably goes 4-8 with our schedule last year (assuming the loss to us as well). Elko may or may not be a good coach, but their schedule won him that award.

Cutcliffe’s “successful” years at duke were against similar schedules

Top 3 in the conference assuming Clemson squares off against FSU for the title.

Both those teams had good years in 2022 are expected to play each other. If Key is the next guy on the outside, I think you have to give it to him.

I think the ACCCG winning coach will win Coach of the Year.

  • Beat UGA and go 6-6, or
  • Win ACC and go 7-5 (it can be done), or
  • Go 8-4 and either appear in the ACCCG or win a bowl game, or
  • Go 9-3.
