Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson won a rather hollow consolation prize this week – an admission from the ACC that officials missed a penalty call against Virginia in the Yellow Jackets’ 27-21 loss Saturday.

The play in question was an incomplete pass from quarterback Justin Thomas to A-back Clinton Lynch in the back of the end zone with about 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter with Virginia leading 27-14. Linebacker Micah Kizer broke up the pass, leaving Tech to attempt a fourth-and-8 play from the Virginia 22-yard line. The play failed, returning the ball to Virginia with 9:43 remaining. Johnson said following the game that “I don’t know how that’s not pass interference.” The play helped drop Tech to 3-6.

A pass-interference penalty would have given Tech a first down at the 7-yard line. Johnson said Wednesday, following the team’s first practice in preparation for its Nov. 12 game against Virginia Tech, that the league “said they messed it up.” The admission did little to placate Johnson, who has found the process of asking the league to review calls something of a useless exercise.

“My response is, Do we get to start over from there?” Johnson asked. “It doesn’t do any good when you just say, ‘We missed it.’”

Johnson noted that the crew in the Duke-Miami game had been suspended for two games after making four errors on the final play of the game, an eight-lateral kickoff return for a touchdown that won the game for the Hurricanes.

“Maybe if that (suspension) happens, maybe you don’t miss as many,” Johnson said. “I don’t know. But three weeks from now, nobody will remember that we didn’t get a pass-interference call. They just remember you lost. That’s what makes it tough.”

Johnson said he has tried to have a positive view of officiating, recognizing that officials are human and will make mistakes and that missed calls will ultimately even out.

“But when there is a slim margin of error and there are some that are just blatant that really change the outcome of the game, it’s just hard,” he said.

will be so glad when those worthless humans are replaced with machines..

I've hoped for this for years. Unfortunately, I think about all the holding penalties that will be called on the offensive linemen. I'll pass on that pipe dream.

That's it. I'm putting an asterisk on this season! The entire season will be stricken from the record books thus keeping our bowl streak intact!

What I don't understand is why we can't consistently get a holding call.

Is it just the way football is? Is it something ACC Officials just let go? Do our players not sell the call enough? What is it? I've seen more chokeholds against us, jersey pulls, and flat out tackles than I know what to do with. It's really annoying.

My tinfoil hat theory is because coaches complain about our blocking schemes in terms of player safety, they almost want to encourage reaching and grabbing blocking so they make it a point of emphasis to show us that teams can run the ball without cutting. Somehow our offensive scheme affects it in my opinion. I don't know, it's stupid and crazy, but whatever it's what I think.

Johnson is clearly frustrated with everything that has happened this season... Can't say I blame him. I've never seen anything like it.

For years now we've made just about every possible rule change to help out offenses. Would it be that bad if we made just one change to help defense?

Does anyone think we should have kicked the field goal instead of going for it on 4th and 8?

At the time there was zero guarantee we were going to get a defensive stop and the score was 27-14.

Another call I'm curious about is the chop block call we had against UVA. It was outside the tackles out on the edge, but it looked to me that it was clearly from the front. And if it wasn't from the front, it should've been clipping, not a chop block I would think. The defender wasn't engaged with anyone else at the time.

Anyone see that one?

If you're talking about the one against MLD, that was one of like 6 plays submitted by PJ to the ACC, and they admitted that it was the wrong call.

That call was completely wrong. The block was perfectly legal because the defender was not engaged with any other person.

It looked way too close to the tackle box to be called clipping or even a crack-back block. But it doesn't matter because it was a good block.

Technically, one could look at every single play and find at least one hold. Holding is a rule that is always bent and not called as often as it most certainly could - which is a good thing. A defensive lineman has an advantage over the offensive lineman because he can straight run up the field, fill a gap, or stunt whereas the offensive lineman has to actually move the defender to a spot or out of spot (especially during pass blocking because the offensive lineman is retreating).

It is quite hard to do this without some sort of grabbing of the jersey or chest plates on the shoulder pads. Please be aware that I am referring to grabbing the front of the jersey and not tugging on the neck, the bottom, or anything outside of being immediately engaged with the chest area, which gives too much of an advantage to the offense. However, based on rules, these would be holds and machines would catch these and call them as holding - which would give way too much of an advantage to the defense.

I am pretty sure Mover can explain it much better than I could.

Didnt change the game. Uva would have punched us right in the mouth and it would have been 34-21 just like that. There are missed calls every play for both sides. If you flip everyone i bet the score comes out the same. Virginia beat us fair and square. The only two games i look back on pissed as hell is unc and pitt. Should have won those two, but we didnt, and we are 3-6 and probably not going to a bowl game this year. Only thing i care about at this point is please to god beat Georgia. Going to a bowl game would just be exhibition at 6-6, wouldnt be to pumped for that.

If we finished 6-6, I would absolutely be pumped about a bowl game. It's all relative.

I would be too, but was I was getting at is the Georgia game is really all that matters at this point. A bowl victory would just be icing on the cake. If we have a bowl victory that means we beat Georgia. Looking back it would be bigger than the bowl game. If we lose before the georgia game, at least we still have the Uga game
