ACC doesn't impress

This is ugly. Miami gets pounded, Va.Tech is gettin rocked, Fla.State struggles with UAB at home, and the defending conference champion is 0-2. Are we really worse than the Big East? I've always denied it, but maybe we are. Maybe we're a notch above the Mountain West and not up to par with: SEC, Pac-10, BigTen, Big XII, and the Big East. What do you guys think?

And I forgot about UNC going down to ECU.

Wake looked ok. They were jobbed by the Big 12 refs at the end. So far, we look like the cream of the crop.

I'll use my favorite western as an analogy of the ACC thus far;

the good- GT, BC, Clemson, Maryland
the bad- Duke, UNC, NC St, UVA
& the ugly- FSU, VT, Miami, WF

The opinion is that the ACC has not looked impressive early on. While it's true that expected powers like FSU, VT & Miami have looked awful --they have, at least early on, been usurped by the likes of GT, BC and Clemson --who have all looked impressive in the early going.

FWIW, the ACC will still have four ranked teams at the end of the day. It's unfortunate that right now, the ACC has no world-beating teams and some formerly decent teams, UVA, NC State and Maryland, have fallen off the wagon.

To be honest, I don't know if the ACC will ever get to the level of the SEC, with its fan bases, resources and lax academic standards. But if you look around the other BCS conferences, very few are playing good football. The Big 10, in particular, looks like they have even more issues than the ACC.

k, just wanted to hear some of your opinions. I think you are right, the BigTen is struggling also, #5 Wisconsin just barely squeaked by UNLV, and Michigan, well, u guys watch tv so u know.

I'd call it a down year in the sense that we're not all looking around asking "Can we have 9 bowl teams this year?"

Whereas recently we've enjoyed having a rather good lot of our schools playing come December, this year we'll have to settle for our best handful and maybe one more squeaks in.

It's too early to tell, but there is always the possibility that this conference is shaping up with new movers and shakers that will year-in and year-out be the head of the league and roll around in the Top 15 in the country. Those schools being ourselves in the White and Gold, Boston College, Clemson and (Although not this year, perhaps) Virginia Tech.

I did not think that the addition of three big-name schools and a re-shuffling of the conference would come with only small consequences and - though time will tell - I think that the aforementioned four schools taking the reigns of the head of the league may be the biggest of them.

I just can't recall F$U ever giving a crap about the rest of the ACC when they won championship after championship and went to BCS game after BCS game.

I think we worry too much about the conference. At the end of the day, who really cares - the easier it is for Tech to get into a BCS game the better.

I'm not going to be comforted by the fact that the ACC is a really good conference when we have three conference losses by the end of October.

Point well taken.

I hope that we are the Coastal flagship team (and I think at this point that is what we are considered), but I would like an Atlantic flagship team we could have a showdown with in the ACCCG (WF doesn't count). BC, Clemson, or Maryland all have a chance to be good this year.

Edit: Also, who in the SEC this year other than UF and LSU is really good? USC barely beats a crappy UL Laf, and then beats UGA at Sanford. Auburn almost got upset in week 1 and then got beat at home in OT (game should have been over long before except for SF's crappy placekicker).

Also, the Big East is terrible. Both of their flagship teams have ZERO defense.

I believe the PAC-10 is the best conference this year. Stop the SEC media hype.

Plus, Wake did not have their starting QB. Riley Skinner is hurt. Their backup, Hodges, had 2 big INT's and only through for 120, despite needing to move the ball in the 2nd half.

Still...the two best teams in the ACC are Clemson and ourselves.

VT, BC, and Miami are between 3 and 5....but do not count out VT. LSU may be the best team in the country...they are amazing.

Wake/FSU is 6-7...and are just above average.
UNC, NCState, and Maryland are pedestrian.
Duke and Virginia are just horrible.

This is, in fact, a very, very good point. Nobody doubted that Florida State was a power when they were dominating the ACC year-in and year-out with real contenders rarely popping up.

Well...to be fair that is also because they always beat everyone out of conference as well.

I don't mind the ACC sucking. As evidenced in the Big East and Big 10 and Pac 10 for years, the best way to get a national championship is to be in a BCS conference with no depth.

I say we be happy our conference sucks and go win 12 games. UGA doesn't look particularly hot either. I had no idea they were starting 2 freshman on their O line and only had 3 returning starts on D.

Even in a down year the ACC should still send the following to a bowl: GT, BC, Clempson, Maryland, WF, UM, FSU and VT. The only teams I would bet against at this point are NCst, UVA, and Duke.
