ACC Expansion?

Hello everyone,

Expansion talk always seems to be a favorite subject. I agree with the creator of this web-site:
http://www.freenet.tlh.fl.us/~mjcollin/ACC.html

Do we have any chance at seeing a real commitment to conference expansion?
I would very much like to see a championship game held every year at Ericson Stadium in Charlotte.

ACC Expansion

Interesting site and seems to be a pretty good consensus of most fans. Disagree w/a lot of his Top 20 and 30 rankings of the football and basketball programs.

The ACC commisioner has stated in an interview (before the BYU game w/Wes Durham) that he wants the conference to be proactive instead of reactive. He wasn't very forthcoming on possible candidates only to say that currently there is not the required 7 of 9 members voting yes to admit another school. If someone can show the hard dollars of what a conference football game can do (as well as the potential to get 2 teams into the BCS mix), and a bigger TV contract as the conference would have more "marketable" games week to week as well as continued success in bball, then the presidents' would be inclined to expand.

Unfortunately, until that is done, the conference is not as likely to add members until the "tobacco rd. 4" is sold on the long-term benefits (i.e. $$$). For his other faults, at least our AD is trying to be proactive on selling other AD's on the need for expansion (along w/CU and FSU's AD).

This guy is retarded. WVU hasn't been ranked in five years.

WVU also doesn't stack well academically with most of the ACC. Pitt or BC would be a good addition.

Nice site though.

BC is the worst choice the ACC could make IMHO. Every year people mention BC.

Marginal FB, marginal bball, nowhere on the map in any other sport...just a big drain on the budgets of all the other ACC schools.

Penn State will NEVER happen. That is as much of a pipe dream as UF leaving for the ACC. They have already established themselves in the Big 10 and are not looking for a way out.

Miami is obvious. Virginia Tech *should* be obvious. Don't give me the "looking for new markets" baloney. If that were really that important we'd be dying to get Rutgers.

So the only other option for a 12th member in an atlantic coast state is Pitt and Syracuse.

Give the nod to Pitt: football tradition, decent overall athletic program, good academics, and within reasonable travel distance from 3 ACC schools (UMd, VT, UVA).

ACC North
Pitt
UMd
UVA
VT
Duke
UNC

ACC South
Miami
FSU
Tech
Clemson
NCST
Wake

NCST plays UNC from the other division permanently, Duke plays Wake from the other division permanently.

Who can argue that Duke and UNC aren't more "northern" than NCST and Wake anyway :-).

Virginia Tech would be another good road game for the fall colors.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">I don't know if that is necessarily true. Most of their alums consider PSU to be an Eastern school, not a Midwestern school. More of their alums are in Baltimore, DC, Philadelphia than Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Milwaukee. They supposedly only joined the Big 10 to give Joe Pa a shot at the Rose Bowl.

Penn State's bottom line is that they have a lot more in common with ACC schools like UMd, UVa, UNC then Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin.

I think if the ACC put together an attractive expansion package that included Miami, Penn State would look long and hard at the offer. Esp. if the ACC dollars are in the same ballpark as the Big Ten.

It is interesting to consider though...

The Boston area would be a good place to visit in the fall, especially with the coloring of the leaves. It is definitely on the Atlantic, and their academics should fit well with GT.

An extended vacation at that time of the year would be a good deal. A trip up into Maine from Boston sounds great! Anyway, my wife hates sports, and the only way she will go to a game is in conjunction with a good trip where she gets to see the country side. A win-win situation for me.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Not to mention the fact that WVU is not on the "Atlantic Coast". This is why I wouldn't want Vandy in the conference, either. Let's stay true to our name.

Plus there's that whole thing if West Virginia is legally a state .... but that's another (off topic) discussion.
