ACC football apathy abounds ... Butch Davis to UT?

I was in NC yesterday and got a chance to drive around a lot. I listened to some local sports talk shows. One did a segment on UNC-GT. They spent most of the time complaining about fans not showing up and joked that many could be dressed in aluminum on Saturday in Chapel Hill. They claimed that fans hate the noon kickoffs and they were confounded why UNC-GT was a nooner. There was no mention of GT's offense, injuries, or UNC's QB situation.

Other interesting topics:

Clemson > Tennessee
Apparently sporting people in the Carolinas believe Clemson is a better job than Tennessee. Supposedly its going to be easy to win at Clemson (what non-probation inducing history is this based on?).

Carolinas Math
App State beat Wofford 70-24
South Carolina beat Wofford 23-13
Therefore App State beats USC by 36 (or something).

Butch Davis looking around?
UNC fans are scared Butch Davis may jump to UT. There was a lot of talk on this subject.

GT was Lucky
FSU lost to GT only because of terrible coaching mistakes by Mickey Andrews and Jimbo Fisher. Mickey Andrews screwed up by pinching his DTs which allowed Dwyer to scat for 2 scores. Jimbo screwed up by not using a timeout at the end and giving the ball to Sims who hadn't played all game. No mention that Tech would've run away had Nesbitt not been hurt in the 3rd quarter.

Classic Carolina ACC mentality. It is easy to win at Clemson and FSU in football because they are in a basketball conference. When FSU loses to a proletariat ACC school, it is always because the other school got lucky or FSU didn't play to their potential.

Also making fun of UNC---the game is sold out in Chapel Hill. "Carolina is a basketball school, no way their stadium is full for a football game"

This is the same mentality that got us our ridiculous divisional setup. The same mentality that our cronies in the conference headquarters share. The same mentality that says the ACC is lucky to send it's #2 selection to the Peach Bowl to play SEC #5 or #6.

The only thing they got right was the fear that Butch Davis might go elsewhere.

Butch Davis would not surprise me at all of he jumps ship for UT. I think he is probably very high on there list.

I would love to see Davis leave - He's building a very strong program at UNC very quickly, and once he gets his own recruits fully integrated, they could be an ACC power for years to come.

I am of the opinion that Davis staying will be a good thing, for the exact same reasons you think him leaving will be a good thing.

Except for the days when we play them, I hope the ACC teams kill everyone else.

Hadn't thought of Davis leaving for the SEC. Had thought recently of his having left the Canes. Big mistake. Good for us (maybe not this week).

I'm still thinking Tooberville may be dismissed at Awbun unless he pulls yet another rabbit out of his hat. Muschamp to Awbun. That leaves who to UT? I don't see Leach leaving TT for UT. Cutcliffe and Spurrier say they're not interested. You know the folks over in Knoxville already have their sights set on somebody.

Who can it be now?

what do muschamp and leach have in common??

both had stints at Valdosta State

also--chris hatcher and hal mumme

Wes Durham was on our local sports radio station yesterday as he was in town to give a talk. Basically said Butch Davis is noway going anywhere. quote was "He got 850k raise for winning 4 games" and likes chapel Hill area.

Also, Wes, while saying he liked the guy, pretty much put down Lane Kiffin saying there is no reason he should be head coach of UT or anyone else.

VolNation is imploding under its own stupidity. I am having to listen to it on the radio here in Chatt. everyday. They are getting ready to ride the rollercoaster that Alabama rode from 97 to 2007.

Agreed. I feel the quality of coaching in the ACC has improved a lot over the past few years, with guys like CPJ, Davis, Cutcliffe, and maybe Jags at BC as improvements over their predecessors (obviously Jags replaced a guy who stayed in-conference, but O'Brien > Amato). Clemson has an opportunity to add to that this offseason, and hopefully Wake can keep Grobe (not sure if there's a serious threat to that yet).

Superior coaching will be good for this conference, and a rising tide lifts all boats.
