ACC schedule changes

In addition to the rescheduled games, the Miami at Louisville game on Saturday, September 19 will now be played at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. UCF at Georgia Tech will remain at 3:30 p.m. but will now be aired on ABC.

Holy exposure! This is awesome.

So they forfeit. How can you not control your team in a small rural area? Failure by the head coach should lead to a forfeit.
Well, then you will get into coaches trying to cover up the failure to control and getting the other team infected. Would you trust guys like Petrino, Saban, Dooley, Smart, Bryant, Any Auburn coach ever to do the right thing?

If proven, that should generate a suspension of at least one season for any coach involved. In addition, intentionally exposing players and staff would lead to legal liability. Given the corruption level of the NCAA, the legal liability is the only real disincentive.

The ability to continue to reschedule is going to rapidly run up against the bowl and play-off schedule

Anybody know the payout implications for cancelled games? Is the conference just splitting all the money from networks evenly? Does VT get penalized financially for likely playing fewer than 11 games now? Since they’re not having fans at home games anyway is there any financial motivation to play a game other than advertising during a broadcast?

I ask because VT basically just decided they didn’t want to play UVA and there don’t seem to be any repercussions at all. They don’t appear to have been required to release any data on why they wanted to cancel. They physically could have fielded a team, but decided not to.

So other than karma, what’s stopping UNC from starting 9-0 (against a schedule that includes all 8 ACC teams not ranked in the Top 26), telling Miami and ND they don’t feel like playing the final 2 weeks, and booking their transportation for the ACCCG?

Why would any team that could fall out of the Top 2 spots risk playing the final week or two when they apparently have a Get Out of Game Free Card.

Unless there's new info that I didn't see, VPI-UVA wasn't cancelled, just rescheduled for later in the season. The ACC moved the Duke-UVA game up to the end of September so that UVA wouldn't be sitting around until October waiting to play. So we haven't cancelled any games yet.

You do bring up a good question about what will happen if some teams do have to cancel games, or if some cancel more than others. I assume there has to be some assurance of "good faith" to avoid your UNC scenario, and if teams are making their best effort to play, I assume they'd get their full slide of the payout.

The UNC scenario is a larger version of "how fair would it be for the Big 10 to only play 8 games and then get a team into the playoffs" question. The ACC may just be counting there being obvious choices for the ACCCG such that a few cancelled games won't matter. If Coastal Chaos/Circle of Suck comes into play, things may get interesting.

I'm also intrigued by something I saw on the crawl during our game but haven't seen followed up on, which was some ACC document that VPI released (for some reason) saying that the league had some conditions under which they would discontinue the season (such as falling under 8 teams playing games). So far, at least, that doesn't seem imminent, unless the wheels really come off as the season progresses.

If I’m not mistaken the return to play rules for the ACC said that the teams with the two best conference win % are the ACCCG participants. I’m sure (hopefully?) they were smart enough to have a minimum threshold of games relative to other teams, but they specifically used win % to not disqualify teams that had to miss a game or two. So any team that is undefeated has zero incentive to play the final week - if nothing else they risk injuries / COVID exposure before the ACCCG even if they win the season finale.

The nightmare scenario would be something like UNC sitting at 8-1 in conference with Miami at 7-2 and UNC refusing to play against them in the finale while citing “COVID concerns” of which they’re not required to present any documentation.

Hopefully they just shut their program down altogether. VPI sucks.
I keep a copy of the game where our backup quarterback ran all over their asses on the PVR so that I have it handy every time I want to remind myself how much they suck ... :evillaugh:

You need to be more specific. I remember this happening twice.

Im pretty sure VT is scheduled to play 11 straight weeks now. Their coach has said they wouldn’t have been able to play either of the first 2 weeks. Reports on their boards of their players not taking precautions seriously. I have little confidence in them getting the full 10 conference games in.

Oh also their starting safety just got arrested yesterday for strangling a girl. So there’s that too.

Clearly Mark Richt has lost control of the VPI football team.

I just took a look at Tech Sideline for the first time in a long time. The board is still from 1997, and they're still crying about "Coach Chop Block." I hope they never play another game.
