Pitt is one game ahead of us with two losses but could very well lose 2 of the next three which includes Clemson & UL. We are tied with Syracuse and VT and they hold the head to head matchup with us so we need them to lose one. So if all this happens, which it very well could, and we end up 5-3 we would finish 4th or 5th in the conference and might end up with a decent bowl matchup against an SEC or Big 10 opponent.

I’m convinced that the ACC bowl tiers exist to make it feel like we get screwed over any time we are bowl eligible. Almost without fail we get picked over and send to one of the outposts.
There used to be rules that would keep a 4th place 5-3 team from dropping more than 1-2 spots in the sequence of bowl selection, but I don't think that still exists. They seem to have switched to prioritizing geographic location and recent participation within the tiers, and they don't mind dropping a team out of the tier they earned. I understand that bowl committees want to maximize their TV ratings and ticket sales, but it seems like Tech has an undeserved bad reputation by those standards. Maybe our fans are more willing to travel to Dublin than Jacksonville, but the seats at most bowl games are often half empty, even for teams that have bigger fan bases. I think the bowl committees are a little narcissistic and have personal biases about what teams are desirable, and some teams do a better job of lobbying the committees.

I see Birmingham in our future. That's where we were headed last time before the last minute switch.

This.

It’s a pretty safe bet how the bowls will play out (based on how they do every year).

CFP #3/4 - SMU, Miami or Clemson (ACC Champion).
Pop Tarts Bowl - SMU, Miami or Clemson. (ACC CG loser).
Duke’s Mayo Bowl - Clemson or Duke
Gator Bowl - Louisville or Clemson
Sun Bowl - Duke or Louisville
Fenway Bowl - BC* or Syracuse or UNC*
Pinstripe Bowl - Syracuse or Pitt
Military Bowl - UVA* or VT* or UNC* or NCSU*
Grasparilla Bowl - UVA* or VT* or UNC* or NCSU*
Birmingham Bowl - GT (unless 2 wins happen).
Holiday Bowl - Cal* UNC* or NCSU*, or GT (we know how this works).
At-large Bowl - GT, Cal*, NCSU*, etc.

Looks like the ACC may be filling some other bowl games it seems like when they open with the B1G and sec getting 4 CFP teams.

ACC teams who still need a 6th win.

Cal (5-4) Syracuse, Stanford, @ SMU.
VT (5-5) @ Duke, UVA.
UVA (5-4) @ ND, SMU, @ VT.
NCSU (5-5) @ GT, @ UNC.
UNC (5-4) Wake, @ BC, NCSU

Looks like BC is also at 5-4 (2-3) needing a 6th win. They have SMU, UNC, and Pitt still to play.
And Wake needs 2 wins out of UNC, Miami, and Duke.

The ACC Champion will almost certainly be in the College Football Playoff and likely get a first round bye. After that, it's all determined on how many other ACC teams get into the expanded CFP. As always, this will be be based on geography and best matchups. The conference vs conference tie-ins can be changed based on availability. If at all possible, repeat appearances from the previous season will try to be avoided.

1. Notre Dame is eligible for any of the ACC's bowl slots, if they are not selected for the CFP.

2. The former Pac-12 teams - Cal nd Stanford - will remain eligible for the former Pac-12 bowl ties and affiliations. That means if any of those four aren't in the College Football Playoff, they'll be eligible for the Alamo, Independence, Holiday, LA, Las Vegas, and Sun bowls.
