Not the politically correct thing to say here, but the ACC is very down this year and quite simply, we're benefitting from that. GT is not as great as we'd like to believe just bc we're going to J'ville. Almost like no one really wanted the prize, but we just happened to catch the bouquet.

No ACC teams ranked in the top 20..not one. On Saturday, all ACC teams lost to SEC teams (Clemson, FSU, GT). FSU and Miami are WAY down. So much so that Coker just got fired.

With that said, some here want to pretend that Gailey is again the best coach ever bc of Jacksonville. It is great we're going, but that doesn't mean too much when looking at the ACC as a whole this year. Tech and Wake in the conference title game? Who would ever have guessed that matchup. Wake! Just proves the conference is down...way down. Look for some stadium seats to be exposed come Saturday and tv ratings for the game to be low as there are no national implications riding on the outcome of this game whatsoever.

Oh, and Gailey just lost to UGA...again.

Tech is worse this year than last year. We've won a few close games (maryland) that we lost last year (nc state) and we've benefitted a lot from everyone on our schedule being worse. The ACC was swept by the SEC on Saturday. I'm not sure any ACC teams deserve a top 25 ranking.

When did Virginia Tech and Wake Forest leave the ACC?

If we played the non-conference schedule of Wake Forest or Virginia Tech, we'd be in the Top 10 @ 11-1.

If we played the non-conference schedule of Wake Forest or Virginia Tech, we'd be the worst 11-1 team in the history of college football.

fixed.

So what. Most of college football seems down this year. This is the first time I can remember where Tech won EVERY game when it was favored. I'm still really pissed about Saturday, but at least Tech is taking advantage of the conference being "down". In the past we've lost games we shouldn't have.

I'm not willing to say we're worse than last year, but I'm not willing to say we're better either.

If we were told at the beginning of the season Tech would be 9-3 and headed to the ACCCG I think any of us would have taken that. There will be years we beat UGA and do little else..but everyone will still complain.

I would have to say that GT is having a better YEAR, but I cannot say whether or not GT is an all-around better TEAM. The offensive numbers, particularly from a passing perspective, are bad. However, the running game has been very good. The defense is great against the run but can give up a little too much in the air at times.

It is pretty clear that the QB play has really affected this team this year. With exception to the 4th quarter against Miami, a four-year starter is having a bad second-half of the season. His fumble cost GT the UGA game and probably cost the D a shut-out.

Losing to UGA has soured the season. This thought probably offers no consolation, but beating them this year, while it would have been great to do, really would not have been saying much. They are not a good football team. If you were an outsider with no ties watching that game you turn it off at the half because it was just a terrible game.

That aside, I am happy to be 7-1 in the ACC and headed to a showdown with Wake Forest, who is also having a fine season. The conference may be down, but there are six teams with at least eight wins, just as the SEC has six teams with at least eight wins (the difference is the six ACC teams are the only ones above .500, the SEC has 8 teams above .500). The Big 12 has seven above .500, the Big Ten five (3 with 11+ wins, how good is the rest of that conference though?), the PAC 10 has three teams with at least eight wins. The ACC has not done that well head-to-head with other BCS schools which may point to a down year.

You play the games on your schedule, and GT has won 9 of their 12 thus far. Two more wins will make for a very good season, and nothing will take away from that for me, not the strength or lack-there-of of the conference, not losing to UGA, not what coulda/shoulda been against ND.

Ya know, it's a good thing I already bought my ACCCG tix, b/c now I'm feeling pretty empty about the whole thing, and if you asked me to shell out the $60+/ticket today, I'm not sure I would be able to do it.
Somebody help me get excited about Jax and the shot at the Orange Bowl, please.

Now, and forever more, To Hell With Georgia.

Well, it's the ACCCG, a game that 10 other teams would enjoy having the opportunity to play in this weekend. It is a chance to be champions of your conference, last accomplished when GT shared the title with FSU in '98 (outright in '90).

It is a chance for a 10 win season, something GT has accomplished only twice in the last 50 years. It's a chance to play in the Orange Bowl, to be part of the BCS and to be the only national game televised that night.

This might help, even though we are reeling from losing to UGA again, if GT does win out they should finish in the top 15, ahead of UGA who may not even finish in the top 25. It's a chance to finish strong and build some positive momentum for next season.

Hope this helps.

So what? The ACC was lousy in 1998 and in 2000, and I don't remember hearing any of this "we're not good, they're bad" crap.

The SEC was lousy in 2004 and 2005, and I don't think any of the SEC fans were bitching about how it wasn't any good to go to the championship game those years.

The sec gets a big boost every year because they average around 80,000 per game or more with vandy and Ky included.
I am guessing that Kentucky would probably only rank behind FSU and clemmons in terms of attendance.
Big attendance = Big time football, in the eyes of many, including HS prospects.

Remember that Tech once had one of the biggest, if not the biggest stadium in the South during its sec days. It was only 60k, but it was a nearly impossible ticket.

If Kentucky was in the ACC they would rank 5th in attendance, behind F$U, Clemson, VPI, and UVa, and just barely ahead of NC State.

Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Vandy are all worse and would be middling or worse in the ACC.

No doubt the SEC clobbers us in attendance.

I don't remember Hot tickets when we were 62,000 but we were the hotest ticket in town during the mid 40's thru the mid to late 50's. IIRC we could seat about 42,000 during most of that time next to impossible to get a seat.

Not sure what you're saying. If you're saying that Kentucky and Vandy get huge crowds at their home games, it's not correct.

In Kentucky's biggest home game this year, against Georgia, they got 62,000. A good number for a team that usually does pretty poorly, but not 80,000 by any means. For Vanderbilt's biggest game, against Tennessee, they only got 39,000, and I'm sure a lot of those were UT fans.

Mississippi State also only had about 40,000 attendance for their games. Ole Miss does a bit better, with 60,000. Arkansas had about 55,000 for their huge game against LSU.

But yeah, seven teams in the SEC clearly beat all but two, maybe four, teams in the ACC. The ACC has four land-grand SEC-like schools in Clemson, FSU, VPI and NC State who have the fan base to support 90,000 seat stadiums. VPI and NC State just need to expand like the SEC schools have over the past two decades.

Maryland, Virginia and Georgia Tech could eventually approach that level of support, but it will take awhile and a lot of sustained success. Georgia Tech, in particular, is hurt by a small alumni base that's much more dispersed than the average school.

The other five teams in the ACC, well, Miami is just New Jersey South, UNC might show some hint of support in football some day, BC is in Boston, and Wake and Duke just have no hope attendence-wise.
