I've tried very hard all season to remain...
patient...
These things take time to get new systems installed blah, blah, blah... all the standard rhetoric I've let play out...
Several Points
1st)... Gailey was hired because 'he was a competant coach' who would be able to take TECH to 'the next level'... he was not hired to reinvent the wheel... our team was not broke ... it did not need fixing
2nd)... He is presumably a coach that can design option style offenses... we based this on his work with Stewart aka Slash in Pittsburgh... the AD told us he would be a good fit because TECH was a high octane offense and Gailey would continue with more of the same...
3rd)... We were told that his experience in the Pros would help him in areas that some thought O'Leary was weak... i.e. his PR skills... he could talk to the Press, Alumni, Administration, and be 'the TECH kind've guy'...
Okay we've all been over this ad infinitum... I don't assume that Coach Gailey should be fired there are many reasons pros and cons but I will continue my thought based on the premise that he will remain as our Head Coach for at least one more season...
That being said what would I like to see next season that would be different from this season...
1st) CONSISTENCY... at every level this team this season has been inconsistant...
- late showing up to walk down YJA
- driving the busses past the top of the alley and going directly to BDS instead of walking down the alley
- not entering Grant Field with BUZZ, the Cheerleaders, or the Ramblin' Wreck leading the way...
This lack of routine, although seemingly innocent, does not allow players or coaches to go through pregame 'rituals' (for lack of a better term)... to focus on the game... when things around the game are constantly changing how can the players focus???
- No set style of game plan or who will execute it... Suggs/ Bilbo debate and then adding Jonathon Smith in situations that seem to beg for Bilbo to get practice
2nd) GAME TIME URGENCY... the offensive team seemed to have no sense of urgency during games
- very late in the season plays were finally being sent in with enough time for the QB to call it in huddle, set the offense, examine the defense, audible if neccesary, and call the snap count before the play clock expired
- Players not hustling back to the huddle, on or off the field
3rd) CONDITIONING...
- not much to say we all saw the lack of it in several games
4th) PUBLIC RELATIONS... although not entirely under the spectre of Coach Gailey this area just was not very positive this season
- Closed Practices
- Interviews not allowed without permission
- Radio Show extremely uninformative and more often than not Coach Gailey seemed to be 'lowering' himself to talk about... 'OUR' team
- Current lack of communication following perhaps the greatest defeat in our storied history, even the King spoke to the Londoners while London was being bombed... but nothing from the Coach, AD, Administration or Alumni Association
Most of the above problems would be subsets of the final point... most or all of the teams problems this season are symptomatic of this 5th point
5th)... DISCIPLINE or the lack there of
- Who among us would ever have said that our team would do a pregame dance F$U style in that Gawd forsaken place last Saturday???
- Not only the team but fans as well acted this season like I've not ever experienced before in BDS... pouring drinks on opposing players and band members, this is not the type of person that TECH has prided itself in producing for the past century... years ago Dean Griffin's discipline would've been swift towards the guilty student, apologetic and earnest towards the persons or institution that were harmed or embarrassed and any damages would have been resolved...
In closing, and I'm sorry this is so long, I would like Coach Gailey to remain... on field injuries can not be controlled and he is allowed a pass on much of the on field performance this season BUT there are areas that the Head Coach does control, as I listed above, in these areas coach Gailey failed this year...
If he had been successful many of us would have been far more tolerant of most of the above issues. This season was not successful by any stretch of current TECH standards and so we as Alumni, Ticket Holders, and AT Contributers have a right to demand a change in policies and practices...
