Is Tech recruiting going to suffer?

By Matt Winkeljohn | Thursday, October 25, 2007, 05:09 PM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Did that internet blog last week suggesting that Chan Gailey is going to be fired after the season hurt Tech’s recruiting?
Jacksonville wide receiver A.J. Jenkins, who de-committed to Tech, told me that the blog was not his deciding factor, that he wanted to back up and make sure he made the right decision. But he also said the blog made him sit down with his parents and talk about it further. “I don’t want to deal with a coaching change,” he said.
Three other out of state commitments I reached all said they were unaware of it as of Wednesday evening.
Hmmm.
It’s certainly possible other coaches could use this against Tech in direct recruiting. Me, I don’t think there’s enough smoke at this point to spook of many of the kids Tech is recruiting. Now, the smoke at Nebraska on the other hand? I can see why kids are running from that. At Tech, it was a match. At Nebraska, it’s like the wildfires of southern California.

Great now 3 more are aware of the online article that was written....IS it actually part of his job to hurt our recruiting efforts??? I wonder why he felt the need to contact them?

It is the honerbound responsibility of all AJC writers to actively work against the GT program.

I mean damn. Its not as though we're aren't always behind 8 ball as it is. Now we got our own freaking beat reporters slinging dirt at us. I can understand writing such a report. That's understandable, but the a--hole went out of his way and is calling our recruits now, more or less telling them not to come here??? WTF

With courage we get from our beat reporter and our "flagship station" we are better off getting no local coverage at all.

Can Georgia Tech start a journalism school? We sure won't be known for it, but it would be nice to see some Tech writers out there for a change.

FYI - I'm only half-serious - if that much.

I don't see anything wrong with this.
Nor do I. As a fan, I have questions about how an article (Dodd's blog) like that will have an impact on recruiting - and Winklejohn is asking the recruits directly.

If another school approaches the recruits, they'll be sure to bring up the article - so it's not like they wouldn't find out eventually (the ones that didn't know about it).

If he does leave, its not like they wouldn't find out. If I were a WR I'd be more concerned about our 2 total passing TD's in week 8 more than anything.

If we started a journalism school and didn't teach them to make those calls, then we'd have a terrible journalism school.

It's his job. It is also not his concern how his reporting impacts the program. It was a news story to find out how significantly this report was impacting the recruits. The more interesting thing to me is that I guarantee if it had happened last year every recruit would have already heard about it and they would have been text messaging like crazy to each other. I'm disappointed that it isn't happening now.

Absolutely. Forget a journalism school, we apparently need an intro to journalism class to teach our students about what journalism is. Hivered, for example, could've used some enlightening.

i didn't think he would do this but I was wrong. Either way, if Gailey is going to be fired then all this will come out soon. Last year Gailey played around for weeks with leaving and it didn't seem to impact recruiting at all.

The problem is with CCG.
He is only doing a story.
Not with the writer.CCG has screwed the pooch again.
A.J.Jenkins has seen this so called passing attack.

Let's look at the other side for a moment:

Suppose the AJC reads on the Dawgvent an unsubstantiated RUMOR that Richt was in trouble. Would the Dawgnation be pissed if the beat writer started calling recruits, making them aware about a RUMOR, and by the call in itself, make the story more believable? Of course they would.

The AP stopped using their poll in the BCS Poll because "they should be reporting the news, not participating in it." This is a form of participation.

I don't have a problem with people being upset about the story . . I am upset about the story. I have a problem with all of these dumbass tin-foil hat theories about Winkeljohn's motivation being anti-Tech. Apparently during the summer when he was telling us Bennett was going to be the second coming of Goose Godsey, he was the greatest beat reporter that we've ever had. Now that he's having to report on some negatives, he's just another anti-Tech leghumper at the AJC.

I'm very curious to see you explain this. There is a big difference between being able to influence what two teams the media can report on for the BCS title game and following up on how a news story impacts the recruiting of the school that you're paid to cover.

This also happened after the AJ Jenkins decommit and was a viable question for that interview.

This was all because of hiveredtech.

He left a message on the blog saying not to post bad things about Gailey because it would affect recruiting. Matt responded to hiveredtech in the comments then posted this entry.

Matt Winklejohn reveals the shocking news that Gailey might be fired to potential recruits!! Before this they must have thought that Chan was completely secure in his GT job, seeing as how people interested in going to Tech wouldn't know the main topic of conversation regarding Tech football these days.

Come on guys, stop being biased against the AJC. You complain when they don't talk about us, now you complain when they actively write about our RECRUITS. Sure it's not good stuff, but guess why it's not good stuff? Because there's nothing really good going on with our program this season. This is just a reporter doing his job. Are we going to complain about the AJC reporting when Tech loses next, because us losing lowers our image in the eyes of recruits?

Is there any truth to the rumor that Matt Winklejohn is a child molester? Should we call his mom and his wife and his friends and ask how the rumor affects their feelings about him?

If there were rumors that Winklejohn had molested children that were substantiated by statements made by police, even if to say they were just looking into it like Radakovich has said he will "evaluate the situation", then you better believe that people would be asking Winklejohn, his family, his coworkers, and his friends about it. Just ask Kobe Bryant or the Duke lacrosse players if the media talks about rumors. You can't turn on ESPN without reporters asking teammates of a controversial player if the situation of the week affects them. Just think back to any of the many situations Vick was in this offseason and how the media talked to everyone involved with the Falcons.

You cannot deny that there has been much talk, most of it NOT from Dodd, about Gailey being fired, and D Rad has done nothing to put those rumors to rest. 75% of sports coverage is just talk and rumors these days anyway, because we live in a 24/7 sports world.
