I'm sure some of you already know about this but I had never seen this Bobby Bowden quote before today. It's from a 2008 article.

"Mediocrity?" said Bowden, sitting in a hotel lobby last week. "Yeah, we're decent, but we're not in the top echelon. Does it bother me? I don't let it. It's one thing about being my age. Who cares? Hey, I can step out tomorrow and go to the beach."

He says stuff like that but then he and folks in his camp want to bitch about how his age is being used against him? Was that not an admission that he has become softer and cares less about winning?

True story: Bobby Bowden doesn't give a **** about anybody that doesn't share his last name. And Tommy is probably not allowed on family property.

His comments this week - "How does that [retiring] help me?" and his suggestion that the pressure of losing doesn't bother him because he's 79 only emphasize this point. It's great that he's old and doesn't have any worries...problem is the average F$U fan/booster isn't 79 and riding out their last years. Most actually wants someone at the helm who doesn't have a "whateva" attitude that he seems to have at this stage of his career. He needs to step down, not because they are 2-3 and haven't been the F$U of old for several years now, but because he is evidently no longer passionate enough about the game for losses to faze him.

And yeah, there's definitely a double standard he's trying to apply when it comes to his age.

Does anyone remember about 10 years ago when someone asked Bowden about retirement, and he said something to the effect of, 'Well, if we ever started losing 2 or 3 games a year, I'd probably retire'. The arrogance of it really pissed me off at the time. I'd love to find the actual quote.

this is like convincing your aging parent to give up the car keys and giving up the family home.

He'd be stupid to retire. He's the only one in the family with a job. That's a lot of mouths to feed.

He does have the perfect job as long as he can get away with it:
  • Millions of dollars.
  • Other people do all the work for him.
  • Doesn't care about how they perform.
  • Awesome parking spot.
