Amazing Stat

The pessimist in me wonders if our tackling issue is partly from trying too hard to avoid targeting and other such penalties.

We were fourth in fewest penalties in 2018.
We were ninth in fewest penalties in 2019.
We were 125th in 2020.
finished 39th in fewest penalties last year.

You probably want to be somewhere between 25-40 on penalties. Further down and you are making stupid mistakes. Higher up and you probably aren’t pushing the rules enough.

Also I think most penalties are one the offensive team. Constant 3 and outs don't present many opportunities for penalties.

This... I'm for a few here and there. Especially on defense when you are beat deep... take the 15 yards and move on instead of giving up the long TD.

Our DBs could use a few holding flags. You only want to be so clean.

By the same token, do you want an offsides call or two, to show the aggressiveness, especially if you're bringing extra rushers? If you're going to play that way - like Tenuta (and that's Jon, not Judy), you might have to go in expecting to get a couple of those against you every game.

After seeing a Clemson DT literally in the A gap before a snap on the goal line without being called, I will risk it.

That non call was as bad as:
A) the non holding on the fake punt Saturday
B) the refs letting the clock run after (I forget who) got the first down and was out of bounds against UNC, leading to a classic PJ blowing his stack moment.

(Tangent of the day - Southern is down at the half to Citadel. Refs blow a call, big time, right before halftime. PJ chews on them as they are running off the field. I mean, he is all over them. Asked him later what he said. He said, "You ain't say anything because I'm right and you know I'm right!" Southern came back to win 51-34. Scored 44 points in last 20 minutes).

That hold is exactly what I want. It was against the rules. Worst case you get called. Don’t hold and you risk a much bigger gain. Best case, you kill the play and no flag. If you don’t hold you are just hoping a D1 team can’t complete a 7 yard toss.

Hard to believe that we have the best QB in the conference, fewest penalties in the country, and are 0-2 against P5 teams.
Can’t get called for PI when you aren’t near the WR; can’t get called for holding if you aren’t blocking anyone.

It is nice to eliminate the procedure and substitution penalties

Also under "hard to believe"-if you had told me before season we would have a game in which we had game with an Off over 450 yds, had NO penalties and NO TOs and LOSE by 25, I would thought you crazy.
