Anthony Barnes ineligible for '06 season

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

He can practice this spring but can't play in the fall I think the article said.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

From what I hear this is around a technicality on a class that should not have transferred from another high school when he went to Cartersville later in his career. It was not discovered by the clearinghouse until late.

He actually practiced quite a bit last year before hurting his knee and had to sit out.

The young man has to be disappointed, but he will be chomping at the bit in 2007.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

The article mentioned a possible redshirt. What did he do last year? A medical redshirt?

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

He hurt his knee in practice before classes started last fall, so he did not offically enroll. He enrolled January of 2006. btw...he is up to 6-4, 235 lbs. now of solid muscle.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

yeah, but it don't mean jack if he can't get on the field and make plays. I was and still am very excited about getting Barnes but I wonder if he will stick with it or slip into the shadows and disappear.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

There is nothing to worry about. He is with the team and with the students taking classes. He is up to 6-4, 235 as he works out like a madman.

He will be in spring practice, fall practice, and bowl practice in December.

In 2007 Wheeler and Guyton will start. Barnes will take on a lot of talented LB's for that last spot.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

This is a major blow IMO. We are too thin at the RB/S/small LB personnel. We can't afford any more of these guys going down.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

Everyone tends to forget the recruits from years past though until they start.

1) Firstly, Wheeler and Guyton start for the next two years hands down. Hall starts this year, and next if they pass the 5th year rule and grandfather it.
2) Taalib Tucker is a MAJOR player that picked GT over Oklahoma, Ohio State, and all the biggies.
3) Travis Chambers picked us over LSU and struggled the first season on picking up things but is coming on.
4) The rest are all new coming in this year in Barnes, Tongo, and Griffin. Holding out hope Braman can become a capable backup. However, Tongo will be expected to contribute this year. There is potential that Bowen ends up at LB.

Also...I do not believe Barnes stays at LB long term, much less small LB. 6-4, 235 as a freshman is not a small LB and he will likely end up around 255 and a much needed DE unless he cuts back on the weightlifting/weight gain.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

Yes he is no small LB and I wasn't forgetting other LB's. I was referring to the absolute lack of special teams players and players that could possibly be moved around to help other need areas. Barnes came in as a safety so I hoped that he could maybe be an option this year at safety and linebacker. Or be so good at linebacker that someone else there could possibly drop back.

I am of the opinion that our secondary has the potential to be very weak this year particularly at safety. If we have any injuries we could be in trouble AND special teams will definitely be in trouble. In fact, I think special teams are in trouble regardless of injuries. There's just not enough of the ST type athletes needed to fill these slots. Barnes was a guaranteed starter on ST's this year that will have to be replaced.;

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

I agree that safey is a problem. However, with Barnes 25 lbs. heavier than his 210 in high school there would be no hope for safety.

Lets hope Bowen works out there. Djay Jones will be fine. Just no depth...scary.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

I hope he doesnt get frustrated and transfer.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

What would that get him? He would stil have to sit out the year.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

Didn't realize that's how it worked out, thanks for the update!

NCJ

he could transfer if he went to a D2 school.
This guy has had some odd academic concerns.I also get the funny feeling he may get frustrated and transfer or flunkout(and/or head to pros).

Re: NCJ

That's true, he could go D-II and play right away. Hopefully he values his degree enough and wants to contribute at Tech so he will stay in school and get ready for 2007.

Re: NCJ

nothing odd about it really.

He transferred from Adairsville High School to Cartersville High School...and Cartersville gave him credit for a class they should not have according to the NCAA. Cartersville did not agree...GT did not agree....but multiple appeals have not won out.

Anthony will be fine...he is loving being part of the team.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

Our safeties were big hitters last year but were major contributors to our defeats against NC St , UVA , and Utah due to their poor pass coverage. I think you'll see more athletic safeties this year.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

Anthony Barnes will most likely end up at DE before all is send and done. He just keeps growing.

Re: Anthony Barnes ineligible for \'06 season

Maybe. Interesting to note that the pros evidently think Gerris is too small...they want him to add 10-15 pounds to his 233 lb frame in order to play LB. I'd love to see Barnes stay at LB if he can maintain his speed.
