AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs says he was shocked when Tommy Tuberville resigned as football coach.

Jacobs said Thursday that he and university President Jay Gogue tried to talk him out of it the previous day and had never considered firing him.
Auburn has hired consultant Bill Carr to help with the search for a new coach. Jacobs said to his knowledge no university representative has been in contact with a potential candidate.
Auburn's wish list reportedly could include Texas Tech's Mike Leach, Louisiana Tech's Derek Dooley and current coaches-in-waiting Jimbo Fisher of Florida State and Will Muschamp at Texas.
Jacobs said there were no financial constraints for the hire. Tuberville stepped down after 10 seasons.

Miss St

I have not doubt that Jacobs asked Tubberville to fire all his assistants and he wouldn't do it...

I think this is SPIN. you don't pay someone 6mil buyout if THEY RESIGN.

Miss St- that would be AWESOME! We'd get to beat him again next year!

Anyone else notice how the SEC West is turning into the inbred coaching division?

Tub - Ole Miss to Auburn to ?
Nutt - Ark to Ole Miss
Satan - LSU to Bama

Yeah, the whole resigning bit is such crap. You don't pay someone 5.1 mill for resigning.

The other crap that we will be hearing is that "he will stay in Auburn and support the Auburn family". Basically, he is saying that he will not coach for a year and 1 day, so he can collect the second half of his 5.1 mil check. I don't expect him to coach this year at all, otherwise he loses that other half of the 5.1 mil...

This is what I heard from an old teammate that went to school there. Plus a lot of his assistants were with him at Ole Miss and it could tie back in to their retirement.

Its been pretty well known for a while that Tubbs wasn't best of buddies with the AU big boys. Maybe he decided to not budge on anything and force the issue with them since they'd be in a rough spot this year with the coaching search. I always thought he'd figure out a way to leave the proverbial flaming dog poo bag on their doorstep, maybe this was it.

nail on the head.

They are all on the state of alabama's defined benefit pension plan. it has a 10 year vest. the annual payout upon his retirement is 2.01% * 10 years (his service time) * high three of his last several years of salary. So he'll get just over 20% of his salary when he retires - every year. this is one reason why he has put up with the nonsense over the past several years - and why he has been reluctant to fire his assistants.

It breaks my heart to see this. He really is a good coach. If Chain Gailey had a 9 win streak over UGAy and went undefeated only to shafted out of the national title game for a Jason White lead team, I would put him way up there. I know things look down there right now, but they would've bounced back. Who are they going to get who's better than him?

Nobody, probably. This just goes to show that Auburn has a bunch of idiots "in control" over there.

Im pretty sure Tubby hates Miss State stemming form his years at Ole Miss, I can remember one year while he was at Auburn he faked a field goal during a blowout just to run the score up more on MSU.

I doubt he hates MSU enough to not want to coach there. Coaches move around from team to team all the time, especially in the SEC. I don't think any of that rivalry stuff sticks.

Why would he work for less, or the same amount of money, as not working? I doubt MSU has the coffers to beat the 3 mil a year bailout.

The perfect storm would be for All-barn to land Jimbo from F$U. Consequently when Reverend Bobby quits/dies/get cryogenically frozen in a couple years, they come knockin' on Parole Officer Richt's door. He is a true disciple of the Bowden system and would know exactly how to "handle" those rogues, err, student athletes. It would be a perfect out for Richt seeing as he'll have a couple more damaging losses to UF and GT under his belt by then.

I never said he should, I was just saying I don't think his ties to Ole Miss will be the deciding factor in coaching MSU.

It sounds like the Auburn AD is about to get run out of town too. He really ****ed this one up bad just in the way he handled it.
