Are student/fans getting too rowdy?

Have seen quite a few posts on the Hive about how the swarm and other folks were throwing cups and stuff at the FSU team and cheerleaders.

What is going on here? I don't care even if FSU taunts us, we don't need to be throwing anything at anybody. Seems like our fan behavior has been deteriorating over the the last couple of seasons now. I know every school has some bad apples, but this seems to be getting worse and worse from what I hear.

Anyone else think this is a problem or am I making a big deal about nothing?

I was going to ask the same thing. Did someone throw something at the FSU band? I saw a lot of commotion in the endzone stands at the end of the halftime show and more cops than usual on the field down there.

Anyone see what happened?

I sit in upper East and I saw the cups and bottles coming from the west side of the north stands.

After FSU scored their extra point in the 2nd half someone from the south stands chunked the football at the FSU cheerleaders and did indeed hit one them.

I'm all for good-natured rivalry, shooting at Yankees, hating Bulldogs and such, but this was just a completely classless and disgusting display of boneheadedness from some of our fans.

I saw these happinings as well. However, I could not do anything about it, because I was in the west stands with my dad. I think FSU got what they deserved though. There were some FSU fans behind us, and they were just as obnoxtious.(thought it was a Puke basketball game) They constantly bashed GT, and made comments like "AJ suggs for heiseman" EVERYTINME he made a bad play. i'm not one to talk, I do my share of trash talking(and I will do it in Athens as well) but never to the point where someone would wanna jump me(i.e taunt the other team, on their home field, in a crowd of THEIR fans, or throw things at cheerleaders)but i wanna give mad props to the lady behind us who stuck up for AJ, and Tech to those babbeling jerks!
I will leave with this. I am going to the UGAg game, and I am gonna be loud and proud of my team, but I will be sitting in GTS section. So I will not fear being jumped during the game. I hope everyone else that atends does the same. GO JACKETS!

When the FSU cheerleader ran the flag out and waved it in front of the students and band I would have thrown something if I had it.

Sometimes you reap what you sew...

The band was pelted with cokes as they returned to their seats after halftime and that didn't really seem provoked but I wasn't other there to see it.

For what it's worth, hate to even say it on a public board, but from my seat in LW have seen cups and such thrown into the endzone at opposing players every single home game this year. It happens when they, not us, score a TD.

To say this is uncalled for is a drastic understatement. No way should this happen or be allowed to happen.

Officials need to be in that area and escort out every single person that would do something as classless as throwing items at players.

I sat in the south stands, and I personally got pissed off when those cheerleaders ran in front of us with their big "F" "S" and "U" flags. Not in front of our own student section n our very own beloved Grant Field.

After Manget kicked a field goal in the 2nd, a student refused to throw the football back and somehow the football made it down a few rows to another student, who launched it straight at one of the flag carriers.

It hit its target right on the mark. After that completely rude and classless act, I was caught up in the moment and cheered.

Sometimes in the heat of battle its hard to keep yourself in check, and in retrospect, I should have been disgusted, but I wasn't at the time.

I didn't throw anything but I guess I wasn't part of the solution either. Sorry.

The cups flew out of the north ez when the interference was was called on Hester. Then the replay seemed to show an excellent play & more cups rained down. FSU's Bolden scored 2 plays later & the cups, shakers & other non harmful objects really flew at Bolden. It was a repercussion of the terrible interference call more than anything.
As the FSU band walked in front of the south stands a plastic coke bottle, with liquid in it, was thrown at the band members for no reason whatsoever. GT police hunted the supposed thrower down, put him in that thumb-wrist lock & escorted him to the gate, where they made him leave. They poured the liquid out of his flask & handed it to him.

It is true that some bad behavior did occur, but what we are overlooking is that FSU was provoking
our young fans and our kids responded which is human nature. For example, if you come to my home you will find what you are looking for. If you act
responsibly you will be graciously received but if you come looking for trouble you will find that too. FSU's students were obnoxious and they inflamed not only our young people but many like myself as well. I think they should stop whining and learn from this incident.

No way for me to sugar-coat it. Every team has good and bad fans, but on average GT fans are the worst I've come across. Home and away I've seen GT fans set new standards for low class.

The FSU cheerleaders were allowed to bring large flags into the stadium which they paraded around in the South endzone after each FSU score. Tech stadium officials should not allow these items on the field, or stadium, PERIOD!!!! It is our fault that we allow this. It is equivalent to Tech being allowed to drive the Wreck back and forth in someone else's endzone after we score. Only Tech is dumb enough to allow it in. It is our stadium, and we make the rules as to what can, and can not, be brought into the stadium and field. The fans were only reacting to what they saw as a blatant example of "rubbing our nose in it". Tech stadium officials are to blame for this situation, not the students.

BOO

That is a good point, Ghost.

Our stadium crew should definitely control that type of rude and provocative behavior from guests.

And if they don't, maybe we need to get Buzz a suped-up mini wreck and he can do donuts after we score at away games.

FSU is also notorious for this type of behavior.
Still, I think some of our fans wen over the top, especially when they hit the ref with the coke bottle.

I'm not sure why so many people feel compelled to get on the back of our fans without regard to the provocation. I'm appalled at the rudeness, taunting and crude acts of other schools on the road as well as visiting our stadium. I don't know what games your attending, but I rarely go to a game without some sort of incident. Last week some a__e from FSU was giving a running taunt to a 10 year old Tech kid in front of him. Georgia's "fans?" I could write a book. The general state of college football has gotten out of hand - from the logo stomping b--s--t to the scene now where the visiting team stands there as the home team is coming out of their tunnel - I personally watched this on behalf of angelic Bowden's FSU bunch last week. This stuff sets the pace for the idiots in the stands. While not condoning it, it certainly explains why it happens. People either take it or respond. The NCAA and the entire organization ought to police the stuff or quit crying when someone responds. You initiate a taunt don't cry when something happens. I don't know whatever happened to the days when you could take a kid to the game and watch it and cheer for your own team without worrying about getting out of a place alive - and that was when bourbon was free flowing in the stands. If you apologists want to see real digenerate behavior, go to Athens in two weeks.

Its not as bad as when a fish hit Ara Parseghian in the head. It came from the student section in the upper east. Nor is it as bad as when the student section pummelled the University of Tennesse team with oranges. That was funny. Nor is it as bad as when the flash card section let go their cards at an official making an errant call.

I was walking out of the UGA/Tenn. game and saw a Dawg with a profusely bleeding nose - inflicted by another Dawg - lying on a bleacher. At least we don't injure our own.

Hey, with a good war people tend not to worry about little things like a few disruptive fans - and apparently we are about to have one.

I am glad the students were actually getting involved in the game. As a student myself, I have seen some apathy on campus about football at times. So what if the students throw plastic bottles onto the field. They are drunk, 18-22 year olds. It is a different story when it is glass or something though. It is bad when adults throw stuff, especially if they have kids with them. If someone throws something onto the field, then they should be thrown out. Those refs made some horrible calls that game and if plastic bottle hurt their 70 year old bodies, then maybe they shouldn't be officiating. About the FSU people waving the flag in the student section...that was pretty bad, but that is what FSU is like. They better do it while they can because they are not the FSU of old. I agree that it looks bad when we throw stuff on the field.. but at least it shows we care and we are not just a wine and cheese crowd.

I sit right behind the Tech bench and I am very disappointed in the security presence at the games these days. Back in the 60's/70's there was a stand manager in each section. Scouts were used to check tickets and not let ticket holders move from one section to take up vacant seats in others. Cops were plentiful.

At 2 games this year, including FSU, a half dozen ten age punks, have come down to bottom row and started heckling the players, coaches, et al in the 4Q. There is no security behind the team bench and none in the stands. This type of behaviour should not be tolerated.

At the FSU game 2 of the group had on UGA caps so they were obviously there to make trouble. Whoever has section 105, row 2, seat 7, that general area needs to know that his tickets went to these punks. And if he emails me I will give him some more information about their behaviour.

Totally unnaceptable. I've been pelted with cups and ice thrown from the upper decks of all places. Narrowly missing my newborn daughter. I now do not brave nearly so many GT games as a result. And regardless of the intended target and school affiliation, you hit my baby, and I'll personally do everything in my power to rip your testicles off with my teeth, chew them up, spit them out and personally walk UGA IVXIIVIXC over so that he can urinate on them.

stingtalk poll, who else here witnessed (or participated in) the "seat cushion incident" of 1995?

You have to admit that WAS pretty entertaining!

It was even more fun to go home that night and watch it over and over on ESPN.

I don't think they've given out free seat cushions since, at least not in the student section.

Go Jackets! See you tomorrow!

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">I was there. Thursday night game against 17th ranked Maryland. I kept my two seat cushions. I was using my boss' tickets so I was pretty well behaved, as were the older fans around me (lower West).

That ranks up there with the ND game in 1980 where people threw fish & whiskey onto the field. That was also the first GT game I attended. I was 6 at the time.

Not condoning the behavior of chunking stuff onto the field, of course, but the seat cushion game was hilarious!
