I only saw three who signed. You can have all the flashy WR's, RB's, and QB's you want but if you don't have the horses up front, it's hard to win. The great FSU teams and last year's UGA team had a tremendous offensive line who were well coached and had great technique.

No, we needed OL. We are fine for this yr, but u usually like to rs OL. To be able to rs & have them ready by the time we lose all this yr's starters we needed to bring in more. As I posted a month ago, 'all of a sudden we can't get OL'. This staff must not put as much emphasis on OL as do most staffs. I promise u, next Feb we will have a criticle need for OL.

all may not be as it seems...wrotto from this class...and possibly brezina...maybe matthews from last years class go to the oline...if this becomes the case, the numbers are not as critical for 2004.

As I've posted several times, Wrotto & Brezina to OL. Don't think Matthews moves as he's been mentioned several times, with Pullen, as looking good at DL.
What I'm pointing out is that even with 1 OL last yr & 4 OL this yr & Brezina, is that we are still short on numbers here. We should've taken 10 OL in 2 yrs. The 6 mentioned above still leaves us a tad short. Next season we should be around 15 for a 3 yr period. So we really need to add OL. The numbers will begin to be criticle this time next yr..

Ace, 5 OL per year? Isn't that a bit high? I haven't looked at any other rosters but if you go 5 per year you are using a pretty hefty percentage of you slots for OL.

I could never understand how we could pass on David Price a 6'5" 315 pound OL from Florida as he was rated the no.34 player in Fla. and was dying to come to Tech because he liked our engineering school. This is not rumor but his father came on the Rivals Board and expressed his surprise and bewilderment. I ask him some questions about his son as well as several other Tech fans and he made it plain that Chan was the one responsible for this decision. Price and Choice was two kids that our coaches blew it on. By the way the Price kid signed with Miss. St.

Big Buck, thanks for your opinion. Coach Gailey, I would emagine, would be glad to talk to you how you feel we "blew it" with Price and Choice. Understand where you're coming from though.

I'm not saying we did or we didn't make a mistake with those two guys. There isn't a team in D1 that probably made all the right moves. Sometimes decisions are made in recruiting that look fantastic and don't work out that way down the road. Sometimes decisions are made in recruiting that look like bloopers that turn out fantastic.

Ace, help me with this. If I count right we have 12 OL on the roster for next year not counting walkons. I think only 2 will be Sr. Add 3 recruits and maybe Wrotto and/or Brezina. Isn't that enough? Not trying to be argumentative, just trying to understand the numbers you need.

On Price and Choice I'd like to have them too. Wonder what the thinking was. Could have simply been that we thought we had other guys for those slots.

Big Buck - we blew nothing in regards to Price. Check his other offers. UCF also viewed film on Price, and no they were not one of the teams that offered him if that gives you an idea. Both GT & UCF didn't like his lack of mobility. We simply didn't think he could help us.

Could some of the kids now listed as OL make the change to DT? I understand big alone isn't enough to get the job done but from my seats we would have had a better W/L record the last two seasons if we had some size inside.

NCJ-keep in mind u lose some as u go along(Bennett, Phillips 1.5 yrs, Tarquinio, Dorsey 1.7 gms, etc, etc). Also, some may leave(Vaitakunas). Some are late bloomers(Jason Kemble, 1 terrific yr, 4 DNP). Some don't pan out(Tim Brown, Garren Findlay).
U should be approx 4 deep at every position. That means approx 20 OL in some sort of developement 17-20 is OK.
Within 2 yrs we lose Reilly, Hartley, Dorsey, Robinson, Wallace, Phillips & Tidwell-Neal. Add in attrition, injury & DNP. We could be looking at needing 9-10 ready to play in 2 yrs.
I simply see our OL numbers as low. Does the math make sense to u? It's rough, but it should give a good idea as to how many OL must be in the system to keep from getting caught with your drawers down around the ankles. For arguments sake, some could say we need 4.5/yr counting RSes.
The 1st thing O'L did after taking over was take a class of NINE OL to replenish. 3 yrs later, '98, we were hitting on all cylinders.

Ace, it does make sense but still seems a little high to me. FWIW I did some quick checking on a few teams (a little problematic since I don't know who the walkons are - except for ga- so I counted them all) and most of the ones I looked at were below your 20. ND had the most with 20 returnees plus 2 commits. Miami was 16-4, FSU 14-4, Ugag 8-7 and or course us at 12-3. I conceded the point, however if we do switch a couple from DL to OL it makes our numbers look better.

You nailed it.BIG problem coming. It takes time to develop OLs.Check in 3 yrs and see if we are not averaging about 100 yds per game on ground with a 3.2 yds per carry.

See my previoius post. I think we are even more suspect on the defensive front. We lack depth, and certainly size. True, we have some ends that can run. Gathers has to be a question mark coming back until health is for certain. But in the middle, we hang on for dear life. The conference is getting more physical and many teams can simply manhandle you if you arent big. Not to mention BYU, Auburn and Ga as nonconference worries.

Tech needs to focus on recruiting some size to reach the next level.

Guys, It is not JUST a question of numbers although just for practice and depth from injury you need that;but you need them more for the CHANCE that they will develop into a grade A OL and not just a body out there.
Especially on Def you can sometimes use depth as a sub for talent.
