with the loss of Okogie I am reminded about what I believe is Ma Tech’s incorrect attitude about sports. It is my opinion that Tech did it’s job: they contributed to Okogie’s education in the direction he chose and helped him get his job, helped him with keeping his job, helped him mature and be able to manage his life, etc. What is wrong with that?

If you agree, Note that it is my opinion that if we can bring in kids that can get along in the community, then almost anything we do will enhance that athlete’s education. And I think Tech will have done its job. Accordingly bring back big time football players like Darryl Smith or Key Fox types who found a way through while in school.

And exactlywhat did Tech b.b. get out of it? what did JP get out of it? J.O. will probably never make a major money contribution to Tech, and not that he has to. All in all, the Institute lost money on Okogie.

I disagree. Any kid that makes it to a major league becomes a recruiting advantage. Its a resume you can put in front of new kids we are trying to recruit. And better recruits we get, more we win and more revenue we generate.

I don't know Georgia Tech's mission statement, but in my opinion the objective of the Institute is to educate and graduate students that can take the information they learned in school and apply it in the economy. Now and then we send an athlete into one of the various professional leagues, but that is not Georgia Tech's job. In fact, each time that happens, it should be looked upon as a failure--a failure to send a knowledgeable graduate into society.

If all we aim to get is kids we can graduate, we're never gonna be competitive in football or basketball. Regardless of the coach. If this is truly what most of you want then I dont understand why you'd ever be upset with mediocre results on the field or court.

Hopefully you're right.

Not much on GT basketball but wasn't he the star player for the last few years?About the only one who could score? I guess if zero wins is your goal then you could be right.

It's funny you take that position and still shit all over Paul Johnson when graduating players is pretty much what he's excelled at the most since he got here.

Okay, now I'm truly baffled by your perspective on this board. You should be the biggest CPJ cheerleader around if this is your belief, as his graduation rates are stellar.

Tech got his services on the court for 2 years. Not his fault we couldn't put a better supporting cast around him. Not for nothing, he did get us to an NIT final, which probably helped sell some tickets the following year. And yes, he is a success story that we can use in recruiting.

This has to be an failed attempt at trolling. Can you imagine the past two years without him?

I have been a big believer that a college experience, chaperoned by the athletic department, on its own, is a big positive for any kid coming out of high school.

I also believe that it is okay to have athletics and I would prefer to believe that anything offered at Tech would include a goal of high level success.

But then conflicts start to show up. I would like to go back to the day where the coach was allowed to bring in kids that would be able to handle it all.

Wish we had a Stephon Marbury caliber type player coming in next year. Lord knows it’s been too long.

22 years to be exact.

I’d just like to see a Marco Coleman type again and a defense that gave us the hope that we could compete nationally.

So if Okogie weren't as good and we hadn't made the NIT and he stayed the whole 4 years that would have been better for the Institute?

Well next time I need a cost benefit analysis, I sure as hell know who not to call.

No you guys dont understand yukonwreck's thinking. He's the type that enjoys finding something wrong with everything. A true glass half empty guy. You're sending kids to NBA? Well that's a failure on your part because that's not your job and you just lost a good player. You have good graduation rates? Well you recruit shit talent that do well with books and not on the field.

Okogie will make $6M over the next 3 years and probably much more after that. That should help out the starting salaries and number of millionaires that we are all so proud of.

Im not buying that we have more millionaires than other schools. We just have an army of folks who keep yapping about making 80K and not spending a dime.

Is this serious or just your wrong opinion? What did Tech get out of it? Finally a kid who showed up, played well, got drafted in the first round. I’m sure that will not help us when recruiting other young kids who may otherwise not see Tech as a place that allows for athletic success.
