AU\'s Calvin Booker to transfer to ACC school...

There's a story on jacketsonline.com that stats that Calvin Booker a QB for Auburn will be transferring to an ACC school, that's all that I can read b/c I don't have subscription...of course it doesn't say which school he picked but only that it was a TOUGH decision....Anyone know where he is headed? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Any chance he's headed to GT?

Re: AU\'s Calvin Booker to transfer to ACC school...

As reported on the hive he's at Georgia Tech. He'll sit out as a transfer and will be on academic scholarship for one year.

Re: AU\'s Calvin Booker to transfer to ACC school...

Thanks for the link. Very interesting....wonder if he'll stay at QB or if the coaches have other plans for him..I can only assume that he'll be given a shot at QB since he chose GT. Wonder how our current QB's feel about the transfer or if it will affect the recruiting of QB's for this year? Any guesses out there?

Re: AU\'s Calvin Booker to transfer to ACC school...

The staff feels that it won't have any effect on recruiting qbs. He'll be eligible in 2007. I doubt that he would have ended up here if he wasn't going to play qb. Coming out of high school he was ranked 33rd at the qb position. Manley was ranked 59 and Bennett 73rd. Pat the qb who beat Georgia was 53rd that year.

What is funny is the report on the Hive for the transfer links to a front page article on Rivals. The entire Rivals/Scout thing cracks me up.

Hivered-
Do you see this QB situation to make some of our own QB's who are deeper in the back up role "gears start churning" as to what their "best options" are? I mean I am all for the competition & for the best players getting on the field. I just wonder how he will be received? Any thoughts?
Not looking to start anything (rumors) here just curious. I hope Booker is well received & that it turns out to be a great situation for him & GT!

Re: AU\'s Calvin Booker to transfer to ACC school...

I don't think any of our qb's came to Tech thinking that we wouldn't recruit any more qb's. They were new once themselves competiting with qb's that were already here.

Re: AU\'s Calvin Booker to transfer to ACC school...

I agree with panther as far as that part goes. That also includes anyone to be recruited in the future. If you think you are a good QB worthy of a starting role in the ACC, then you can fear no one unless you are going into a situation where there is a Brady Quinn, Matt Leinart, Vince Young already in place. That is not our problem at this moment..sames deal with about 100 other D1 schools.

That being said, I know that the staff finds it hard to get decent raps in for more than 3 QB's in spring/fall practice....and for more than 2 QB's plus a scout QB during the season. Past 4 QB's there is really no benefit to the individual player.

In 2007 you are looking at Bennett, Garner, Manley, Ingram and whoever comes in as a new recruit in Feb-2007.

In 2008 you are looking at Bennett (Sr), Garner (Jr), Manley (Sr), Booker (Jr), and Ingram (So-R)...and whichever new recruits came in Feb-2007.

Definitely some tough decisions to be made.

Re: AU\'s Calvin Booker to transfer to ACC school...

Point well taken, Hiveredtech. You made good points there. We could argue the same thing at the GT QB position although it hasn't been all highlights (as the greats that you've listed above) for our QB Ball who has had the QB position locked down for past 3 yrs (MIXED w/ good/bad performances)... I was just wanted to know what everyone's thoughts were about our QB situation as the depth chart grew at that position....Look at Bilbo who changed over to WR and now is in the NFL. (change isn't always bad)
Like u said beyond 4 deep it gets interesting. In summary, nothing new GT hasn't faced in the past w/ QB depth just wanted to hear some thoughts....Best of LUCK TO every QB competing for a position on the team.....MAY THE BEST MAN WIN! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drink1.gif

I believe

that Booker will be sitting out the 2006 season (he already redshirted) and will be available to play in 2007 and 2008. Sounds like 2008 will be another big year for recruiting QBs as we lose 3 QB's in the depth chart, although I think we won't recruit that many.

Re: I believe

If booker does not win the job he would likely move to safety, LB, etc.

Re: I believe

I understand full well that greater minds than I have are hard at work at GT considering who to bring in and who not too. But with my limited knowledge, I have to wonder if we are helping ourselves here on this deal. We beat the best Auburn had with what we have and most everyone is complaining that what we have isn't good enough. Now we have a player coming in that not only could not make it at Auburn but is getting bumped back again, to backup the backup, and is getting a scholly. Am I missing something here? Please correct me if I am.

Re: I believe

Nobody said he would be a backup when he becomes eligible. He will not be using an athletic scholarship next year. He will have an academic scholarship. Take a trip to the Auburn board and they seem to like him a lot and agree that he has a very strong arm. As I posted earlier, he was rated higher than the qb's in the system now. We beat Auburn with a team and not with one player(qb). Auburn's offense is set up for a qb who is a touch passer. Booker is more suited to an offense that throws the deep outs than he is to the west coast offense that Auburn now runs.

Re: AU\'s Calvin Booker to transfer to ACC school...

I am excited he is choosing to attend Tech, however it gives me pause to know he was the third string qb at Auburn. If he is so great why couldn't he earn his way into the starting line-up? Hopefully, he will fit in our system and be a explosive player but again if he is that great why is he not starting at Auburn?

Last time I checked we whipped them twice in a row and now we get their rejected qb?? In any event I truly hope he is able to lead our Yellow Jackts to victory in the future!!

Re: AU\'s Calvin Booker to transfer to ACC school...

Well...he is from Georgia so that should make a lot of folks happy.

btw...he also had an offer from Notre Dame out of high school.

His brother is SS Same Williams...already at Tech on scholarship. Calvin had a 3.5 GPA and 1010 SAT (on the old scoring) and in all old recruiting articles talked about education being important and how he also intends to get an MBA.

Seriously though. He is 6-4, 242. He weighed 205 out of high school. He runs a 4.8 forty. I have no clue as to his athleticism in regards for being suited for other positions, but if QB does not work out it seems there could be other options...but this is pure speculation. At this time, he is a QB.

Re: AU\'s Calvin Booker to transfer to ACC school...

I think that this is a great transfer. After RB is gone we seem to have some real questions about whether the guys we have on board will be an upgrade at QB. Adding Booker gives us another option. He might be the best option for starting QB for '07 and '08. If not, he sounds like an athlete who can find a place to play (S,TE,LB). Add to that he's a good student - can't see the downside.
