Just a few days ago, the Jackets officially offered a strong prospect out of the talent rich First Coast High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Avis Commack, a 6’ 4” 185 lb. Wide Receiver, had 43 catches for just over 600 yards and 10 touchdowns his junior year to lead.

Evaluation: Commack is a lanky wide receiver with deceptive speed and great height. Needs to add more weight but he is explosive after the catch. He is the type of receiver that you want to get the ball to in space so he can work to make something happen right away. He shows very good hands and can pluck the ball on the run without losing too much time in transition. He gets down the seams and shows the ability to get open on digs and skinny post routes. He has excellent leaping ability and will go up and challenge for the ball in the air. He still has a lot of developing to do in terms of routes and feel for zone coverage. He has adequate speed and his feet are very quick. There are some concerns about his tendency to be a body catcher and he seems more comfortable when balls are thrown outside of his frame.

My Analysis: Commack reminds me of Eagles receiver Todd Pinkston. However, I would venture to say that he is much tougher than Todd. He certainly does not appear to have any confidence issues, as he has mentioned to Scout reporters, “I think I could come in and make an even bigger impact than he (Calvin Johnson) made.” Avis is what you might call a “yards per catch guy” who is much better when he either gets the ball right away off the line or downfield on vertical routes. He needs some work on his route running, but once he has spent some time with his coaches and in the weight room, he should develop into an exciting target. Tech and South Carolina appear to be the clear leaders for Avis at this point. ESPN indicates a little more of a Tech lean, but his fellow teammates, Nigel Carr (Florida State) and Shaq Wilson (South Carolina) are trying their best to lure him to their respective schools. Only time will tell, but I really like our chances with this young man.

He is definitely on the light side. "Adequate speed" means average speed - no better. And there is a difference in "lack of confidence" and being arrogant. It's never a good idea to compare yourself to the greatest WR to wear the White & Gold. Let other compare you, but never do it yourself. This is the only reason I don't like this guy - he sounds too much like Terrell Owens.

He has deceptive speed not adequate speed. If you look at his film you'll be impressed with his ability to use his physicality to catch the ball and create space.

He runs track so I wouldn't say that speed is a problem. He also won't stay at 185. Calvin put on 30 pounds after arriving on campus.

I prefer to meet him before I judge him.

I was going by the term later in the evaluation "He has adequate speed and his feet are very quick." What does he run in track? Does he run distance or sprints? Hurdles or flat? I ran track too but my 40 time was only 4.9.

Also, I'm judging his character more than anything. I just don't like too much cockyness (ala Randy Moss/Terrell Owens). If he can keep that in check, I'll be glad to see his athletic ability in action.

GT,
Be glad to get him but his stats(15) on yds per catch are not really "explosive",(18+ y/catch would be) but he may improve that his sr yr

I appreciate these good posts you're coming in with MGT. I don't know beans about these recruits but it appears that you do. Evidently the coaches at GT seem to like the guy enough to make an offer. So, that's good enough for me.

Judging by the quote, he isn't implying that he will be as good as or better than CJ. He believes he can make as much of an impact, if not more. Calvin had some games where he wasn't the sort of factor you would expect from a "can't miss wide receiver". I'm not suggesting it was his fault because I don't believe that at all, but wide receivers with less ability than CJ (i.e. basically every wide receiver out there) can have as big of an impact as he did if they are fortunate enough to have a really good quarterback.

Ok, ok. Maybe I read too much into his statement. I just get tired of seeing the Keyshawn Johnson / Terrell Owens / Randy Moss (I'm sure the list could go on and on and even include every other position) type players these days. Maybe that's why I stick to college football and steer clear of the NFL.

Can't say that I blame you. The main difference between college players and nfl players imo is: college players play for the name on the front of their jersey, while pro players play for the name on the back of their jersey.

The list is based on his interest. The list also only shows a max of 7 schools. If more than 7 offer him or he has interest in more than 7 the other schools don't show up on the list.

If you'll read his interviews, you'll see that FSU is showing a lot of interest in him and that they're close to offering.

Is Florida, FSU, G,O'Leary so loaded that they have no need for this one?

Second tier schools like Ctl Florida do not waste time even making offers to kids they know will end up at first tier schools. That is why you can have a 5-star player in Birmingham choosing between AL and AUB...yet not even have a UAB offer.
