Just a few days ago, the Jackets officially offered a strong prospect out of the talent rich First Coast High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Avis Commack, a 6’ 4” 185 lb. Wide Receiver, had 43 catches for just over 600 yards and 10 touchdowns his junior year to lead.
Evaluation: Commack is a lanky wide receiver with deceptive speed and great height. Needs to add more weight but he is explosive after the catch. He is the type of receiver that you want to get the ball to in space so he can work to make something happen right away. He shows very good hands and can pluck the ball on the run without losing too much time in transition. He gets down the seams and shows the ability to get open on digs and skinny post routes. He has excellent leaping ability and will go up and challenge for the ball in the air. He still has a lot of developing to do in terms of routes and feel for zone coverage. He has adequate speed and his feet are very quick. There are some concerns about his tendency to be a body catcher and he seems more comfortable when balls are thrown outside of his frame.
My Analysis: Commack reminds me of Eagles receiver Todd Pinkston. However, I would venture to say that he is much tougher than Todd. He certainly does not appear to have any confidence issues, as he has mentioned to Scout reporters, “I think I could come in and make an even bigger impact than he (Calvin Johnson) made.” Avis is what you might call a “yards per catch guy” who is much better when he either gets the ball right away off the line or downfield on vertical routes. He needs some work on his route running, but once he has spent some time with his coaches and in the weight room, he should develop into an exciting target. Tech and South Carolina appear to be the clear leaders for Avis at this point. ESPN indicates a little more of a Tech lean, but his fellow teammates, Nigel Carr (Florida State) and Shaq Wilson (South Carolina) are trying their best to lure him to their respective schools. Only time will tell, but I really like our chances with this young man.
