BC Lineman Confesses

But I am sure he is only admitting to holding on their 5 CALLED penalties :)

Like I said in another thread. They did what they had to do by holding, and they did it the right way. If you look good doing it, the refs will let it go half the time.

I was telling my son at the game that somebody needed to take a late hit shot on Ryan to see if we could shake him up. It would have been worth the 15 yards if it rattled him. I also remember from high school ball that if someone held me I usually tried to stick my hand up in his helmet and poke him in the eye or grab his nose. Usually he would make noises like a pig and complain to the ref but he usually got the message. Of course sometimes I just did the best I could because I didn't want to enrage some beast.

If you know they are cheating though, (holding IS cheating) then you have to fight fire with fire. The sad thing is, one of the reasons I can no longer watch the pro game is that the holding is so pervasive and I despise the parade of flags that the pro game is. You can't make it as a pro OL without a good holding technique.

Sometimes I think the game would be better if they just did away with the holding rule and let the OLineman tackle same as a D Lineman. That would really make the offenses take off. Let the offense use their hands as they wish and go to 20 yards for a first down to compensate.

Its not like they did anything wrong. I could have told you during the game that holding our guys and frustrating them was part of their gameplan. Notice the 1st half holding calls versus the second half. Obviously BC was getting away with it, and Tech players and coaches were making the officials aware of it, so by the time the 2nd half rolls around, we are finally getting the calls. By that point, BC had done the damage.

Kudos to them for having a good gameplan. We have to learn to deal with not getting holding calls on opposing teams offenses.

Do the coaches know the officials prior to the game?

My main question is: will it be possible for our coaches to provide game film of the GT v BC game to the officiating crew should we meet again in the ACCCG? By then it may become wide-spread knowledge anyway.

BUT, like BOR said, we need to learn to get around the holding when it's not being called.

I'm sure we could do something along those lines, and I trust Chan to do it. Chan is not one to cower when faced with officials. Hell, he was more than half way across the field during the Samford game.

Since it's an ACC game, can't Chan send a tape to the head office and seek a reprimand for the officiating crew?

It was pretty basic to me. BC can't afford for Ryan to take too many hits and saving a down is worth more than 10 yards to them. 1st and 20 is better than 2nd and 16 if they have Ryan sitting back there throwing the ball.

My thoughts exactly.

BC sure are greedy SOBs, they are talking about how to keep holding but get caught even less:

Don’t hold that line

While Saturday night’s 24-10 win over then-15th-ranked Georgia Tech was impressive, not everything went perfectly. The BC offense was whistled for six holding penalties against the Yellow Jackets and that has been a topic of conversation between the coaching staff and offensive line.

Right tackle Anthony Castonzo said it’s all about technique. “You’d think that’s it’s more of an issue of stopping the grabbing,” he said, “but we just have to move our feet more and keep our eyes on our target. It’s more body position than anything and that’s what we’re working on right now, our feet.” . . .

I assume you're being faceitous...but just in case, what he's saying is that if you move your feet and stay in front of your man, you don't need to hold.

The difference between a good offensive lineman and a great offensive lineman is not getting caught for holding.

In my day, we could not use our hands to block. But if we were real cleaver with our "handless" block, we could grab the opponent in a way that could only be seen when the opponent was running away from our block, definitely not when he was running towards us.

We had good offensive linemen. BC had great offensive linemen. But around that bunch of yahoos that called themselves officials last Saturday, the fine art of holding without being caught was almost lost through carelessness. That bunch of refs couldn't catch a winter cold in Alaska, much less a hold in Atlanta. So the opponents got careless a few times and were caught.

It's like palming in basketball...everyone does it on every play, if you started calling it every time you saw it the game would stop. Is it true to the game? No. Would the game be better off without it? Most likely. Is any commissioner going to have the balls to step up and start actually outlawing it? Definitely not.

Thats why I would have cheap shot him to send them a message to play it straight up.

On Sunday, all the coaches tag what they deem bad plays and/or calls and send it in to the league officials. They then review it and take appropriate actions on the ref crews. This is how they are graded throughout the year and when reward (bowl) time comes up they pick who they feel did the best.

Problem is that Ron Cherry is very dirty and it will catch up to him one day. This info is from a friend who is an official in the ACC, the stories he told are quite amazing.
