BCS Heart Attack watin\' to happen.

After today's games, there is an ever increasing possibility that the BCS is going to have to pick from >2 undefeated teams. Each major conference has an undefeted team, and none of them play each other (from a diff. conference) for the remainder of the year

ACC - N.C. State
Pac 10 - Oregon
Big East - Miami + VT
Big 11 - Ohio State
Big 12 - Oklahoma
SEC - A bunch of guys who will spend their entire careers saying "Yes Sir!, Right away Sir!" to their GT boss.

Also, Notre Dame is undefeated and plays none of the teams above.

Air Force is undefeated and ranked 19, but plays Notre Dame.

Bowling Green is undefeated but it doesn't really matter. No quality games are on thier entire schedule.

FSU gets to play spoiler with games against N.C. State and Notre Dame.

On an unrelated note, I just noticed that UVA is good again.

They have had two top-10 recruiting classes, and almost every single one of their starters are from these two classes (i.e. all frosh. and soph.)

They lost their first two games this year, and have now won 5 in a row. That's 5 in a row. And they are only going to get better. I can only assume that Al Groh got these classes because of his NFL experience. I hope to God that Gailey can do the same. We'll see in Feb.

Whatcha gonna do if Air Force beats BYU tonite & Notre Dame next Sat in Colorado Springs. AF has already beaten Big 10 Northwestern @ home & PAC 10 California away ( Cal has beaten Mich St away & Washington away & is pretty darn good). If AF beats Colorado St (who has beaten Virginia away & Colorado in Denver) the Falcons may have the schedule strength to warrant a top 8 ranking & make a BCS Bowl & maybe even the Fiesta.
Then again, this time of year there's almost always 8-10 unblotted records & always only 1 or 2 remain at the end.

CJ I agree. the one thing I notice is that Groh plays a ton of those freshmen - pure freshman at that. We seem to like to redshirt everybody. Look at the Miami defense - the second string line has more playing time than the first string. It will be hard for us to attract kids like VA. becuase they don't get to play here.

Re: BCS Heart Attack watin\' to happen.

Air Force beat BYU 52-9 last night and I have to post about this game. This was the first time this year I've seen Air Force play, and it was the most exciting team I've seen in years. By far the most fun game I've watched all year.

The Air Force offense makes FSU/Miami/anyone else look flat out boring in comparison. They run triple option 95% of the time. The other 5% are trick plays. They accelerate so fast on the run it's unreal. After their second score in the first quarter, the had a successful onside kick that suprised the hell out of everyone. The QB pitched the ball back once to have some other guy pass it downfield. They had a fake punt. Awesome, awesome game. I'm rooting for these guys to go undefeated, make the BCS, and win that too. Everyone here, you gotta watch next week's game between Air Force and Notre Dame. 10:00, Sat. night on ESPN2.

DaveTech, I think Groh is playing those freshman/sophomores because they are probably a better talent than the juniors and seniors that he didn't recruit. If Gailey can pull in a top 10 recruiting class like Groh, and they are a better talent than our juniors/seniors at that time, then we may see the same thing here. I just hope he can get that top 10 recruiting class. It seems to me that Groh got them because of the pro head coach job he had. If that is the case, then surely Gailey could duplicate those recruiting efforts. we'll see....

Re: BCS Heart Attack watin\' to happen.

I second Conyers J. Air Force is very good. If you want to see what the running game is all about, then watch AF hosting Notre Dame next week. Also, the best running QB in college is the Jr that AF has, Harrige from Bonair, Ga. He's terrific. They have an offense all their own & run it very, very well. RELENTLESSLY. The Falcons demolished BYU (a team GT struggled with) & if the airplane guys beat ND this Sat @ home, will vault into the top 10.
Army, Navy made a HUGE mistake abandonning the wishbone, flexbone, brokenbone option attack (that Navy did very well with in '95,96,97) to be more conventional. Glad Paul Johnson is @ Navy to put the option back in. It is the only way the academies can compete. AF has been a scary team for 15 yrs because of the option & HC Fisher DeBerry understands it extremely well.

Re: BCS Heart Attack watin\' to happen.

Its like this every year but come december it will all pan out to the two deserving teams.

Re: BCS Heart Attack watin\' to happen.

If Notre Dame goes undefeated, there is no doubt of their consideration for the top spot. They generally have an edge on every one else for attention from the media. Most of the other teams in the nation get strong regional coverage, but Notre Dame gets strong national coverage.

Among the teams mentioned in your post, Oklahoma, Maimi, and Ohio State were three of the top preseason favorites, so they will probably be considered for the top spots after Notre Dame.

North Carolina State would bring up the rear because of its weak schedule at the beginning of the season.

If Virginia Tech beats Miami and contends with all of the above, they would be considered after Notre Dame, and the triad of Oklahoma, Miami, and Ohio State. Media wise, VT cannot compete with the other teams for BCS. Even though the BCS rankings are supposedly non-biased, the strong media teams seem to get the edge.

Just my guess.

I watched the Air Force - BYU game as well. I think it's interesting that when we were looking for a coach, Fisher Deberry's name came up (very unofficially) and there were several posters who trashed him and his "boring" offense.

Here's the BCS real problem:

What if you >2 one loss teams?
How do you legitimately separate those teams.
Say AF beats ND
ND beats FSU
VT loses somewhere in the Big East, but beats Miami on the last week of the season
U[sic]GA loses to either Auburn/Florida
AF loses to anybody?
How do you determine 1-2 then??

Re: BCS Heart Attack watin\' to happen.

Gator, that's yet another BCS heart attack scenario. Just like >2 undefeated teams. Of course BCS #1 and BCS #2 always go.

In fact, when FSU played an undefeated VT for the title 3 years ago, remember how a 1-loss Nebraska was only a fraction of a point away from beating out VT for the title shot? Well someone went back, and reran the numbers with this year's rules (that eliminated margin of victory), and Nebraska would have beaten out undefeated VT under today's rules. That would have caused major problems as well.

Of course, without a playoff there is no perfect system. So I'm going to just sit back and root for 7 teams to go undefeated because to me that would just be the most awesome/hilarious thing in sports history.
