Exactly that. If ST's get them some early scores, we may be in trouble.

I'm so sick of hearing about "Beamer Ball" (no offense TechFan). Their so-called ST dominance is only a mask for a crappy offense and defense. I predict we beat them at their own game - again.

non taken - I generally agree with Beamer Ball being all hype - reguardless, they come up with big ST plays every season, and our kicker for lack of a better word is sucking right now... I'd hate to see that happen to us.

Looking at the schedule - if we beat VT, (hope I'm not tempting fate) we're going to be 6-0 going into the Clemson game. And if we beat them... ooo I don't even want to say it...

I completely agree with you. Our kicking game has sucked this year.

Scott Blair is 1/5 on FGA. PLUS, he missed an XPA. I won't place all of the blame on him though - the holding has been atrocious as well - which has led to the missed FG.

Punting has been ok so far. Blair is averaging 44.2 yards on 5 punts.

Kickoffs - on average, opponents are starting from the 23. There have been ZERO touchbacks though.

I'd say that Blair's kickoffs are better then we've had in a few years. Bell simply did not have the leg strength, and routinely put the ball down around the 5/10 yard line. This season is the first in a long time that I've seen an opposing team start the return from the endzone. The guys need to work on the coverage, because Blair's holding up his end of the stick in that area. As for punting, I'll cut him some slack, because he's replacing the weapon known as Brooks.

All we need, to fix our kicking game, is a snapper.

Bell never did the kickoffs unless they were trying for a pooch kick. Blair did all the kickoffs last year and the year before was Yahoiaio (I know I didn't spell it right, but god thats a hard name to even think of in your head) Blair doesn't need slack to be cut for him, he's averaging better than Ben Arnt (spelling again) who was a pretty good punter before we had Brooks. 44 yard average punt (thats what Blair is right, I'm trying to do this whole post from the top of my head) is nothing to gawk at. Brooks was so good because he had direction but his average was not much more than that. Besides, unless you use two different punters (one for direction and one for distance) average is a useless stat because if you punt from the 50 and its a touchback, you just got yourself a 30 yard punt, thats an average killer. The only thing wrong with our ST are the FG's and punt returns. Everything else has been fine.

I'm not as worried about the kickoff. Starting from the 23 is much better than two years ago when it seemed the other team was always starting from the 35. I would like to see a stronger leg doing the kickoffs though - it has to be accurate to of course.

I'm actually pleased with his punting numbers. I probably should have made that clear. I'll take 44.2 yards per punt. Once our O starts rolling, we won't be punting much anyway.

As a guy who hates VT but had the VT ST/D in an ACC fantasy league, it is simply not correct to say that they are hype on D and ST.

First, unless I am badly mistaken, VT plays very similar schedules to us, and had D rankings as good as Tenuta's exceptional Ds, but on top of that consistently scored points about as often as our D did the year we scored a sick number of points on D (was it 02?)

Second, they block a lot of kicks and that puts even more pressure on the holder/snapper and so far I've seen a lot of bad snaps that seem to have made Blair wait to kick. If we do that this week we will probably get a kick blocked.

I agree that their O is awful and pretty much always has been. I can't help note that they used to disagree with me but now techsideline has a lot of the same comments being made about previous Hokie O's that I was making about them at the time.

In conclusion, I think the Ds are similar and our O is better. IMHO there are only four ways they can beat us.
1. They score on ST or D.
2. Killer Turnovers.
3. Tyrod pulls a Danzler and neutralizes solid defensive play by GT.
4. Key injuries (Dwyer stands out as tough to replace).

Straight up I think we should eke out a win but the teams have a lot of similarities and therefore I think that we have little room for error (IMHO).

As the week wears on, I find myself more in line with GTCrew's thinking on the game.

Who in their right mind wants to go to Blacksburg unless they're being paid?
