I saw a news feed today explaining why college refs were wearing an 'RR' patch on their jerseys. It's in honor of Rogers Redding who passed in April at the age of 81. He was a ref (SEC & SWC) and eventually Supervisor of Officials for the SEC among other things over his 30 year career.
That name sounded familiar, so I did the google. Rogers graduated from Georgia Tech in 1965 with a degree in chemistry. (Okay, cool.) After graduating, he became a college professor and administrator. (Standard stuff). One of his stops was at the University of Colorado. (I'm not liking where this is going.) He eventually worked his way up in the ref world to be involved in three pre-BCS championship bowl games. One of those...the Notre Dame-Colorado Orange Bowl after the 1990 season.
