Belichick is a big fan of Navy Coach Paul Johnson, whose run schemes Belichcik has studied in the off-season

It's all part of a system that's so simple, it's complicated – at least for opposing defenses. Conceptually, the offense builds around one basic play – the triple option, a system unto itself that's worked so well that New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick called it "one of the best running offenses of the last decade."

But even as Belichick flourishes at the highest level of his profession, he is engaged in the equivalent of a postgraduate education program, an independent study tour that has taken him from Annapolis, Md., to Gainesville, Fla., from a cot in Ted Marchibroda's hotel room to Jimmy Johnson's boat.

At each stop, usually in the off-season and sometimes involving intensive film study, Belichick has picked the brain of his host, gleaning bits of wisdom about everything from Navy's run offense to Johnson's philosophies on drafting and contract negotiations.

Two years ago, Belichick spent two days watching film of the running game at Navy. He had an appreciation for how a program with limited resources could produce what he considers one of the best running games in college football.

"When he told me he wanted to come, I laughed and said, 'Yeah, I can see Tom Brady running the option,' " Navy Coach Paul Johnson said. "I think he was looking for things we do off the zone play, or blocking schemes that he could incorporate into his system. The guy is a brilliant guy. Who knows what he was looking for? I think he's intrigued with the option game."

to me this was the BEST quote of them all; one I don't think Chan would ever say or have done (yes that was a slight of hand towards chan)

"Your ego can't be so big that you're not going to borrow from other people," Johnson, the Navy coach, said. "The best coaches are a move or two ahead of the other guys. I think that's the kind of guy he is."

I cannot find the link to the article, but Gailey was quote as basically saying (paraphrased):

"It's all about the system not the players. You don't change a winning system just to fit players. This system has won 5 Super Bowls."

PJ is the opposite. He has a system that is flexible enough to account for his players strengths. I honestly believe that if it turns out we need to be running Air Raid. PJ will have us running Air Raid. He would rather win than be right unlike Gailey.

that is why he was a poor HC. Mike Irvin, as bad as I don't like him, said the same about gailey....he believes the system makes plays not the players....

This is a very good positive sign from PJ!!! I am excited about that.

That reminds me what Jerry Krause told Micheal Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Rodman, and Phil Jackson. He said, "Organizations win championships, not players or coaches." It's funny that the organization hasn't won a championship since the players and coach left.
