I've been away from the thread the whole day until right now and I haven't read through most of the second page, so sorry if I repeat anything here. I honestly didn't give the "reasons" or excuses because I became tired of typing for that post and just decided to wrap it up.
The vpi game last year just had everything going against us. Coming into the game, any rational observer would say the chances were long for Tech to keep it close. When your starting QB is still exhasted from sickness and hasn't been to practice in weeks, it's not exactly looking good for you. The way things were going at first, we probably would have still lost but the score would at least be somewhat respectable.
Then when the field goal was blocked, the s*** hit the fan and things started cascading from there. It was fitting when that punt hit off the VPI player, it didn't bounce our way for a turnover. That's just how things were that day and the two straight pick sixes an exhasted Reggie threw sealed a blowout.
The Emerald Bowl has many reasons and I felt the final score of 38-10 did not reflect the game and certainly not the team's involved. First of all, I guess the week before the game the grounds crew took the week off and the mud left by the rain did many things to hurt our game. Primarily, we were built on speed and Utah was built on size. Our defense's 4.4s became 4.8s on that field, but Utah's OLs still weighed 325 pounds, creating an unquestionable advantage for them. Also, I don't know if it's our cleats or what, but I know Chan didn't cause many of the players to slide around the field. I remember Eric Henderson falling down and getting up multiple times trying to rush the QB and one of the safties falling down a Utah TD reception. Not to mention that it seemed everytime PJ had a big run and our offense was finally breaking through, Reggie would slip and have to essentially take a sack, which would never happen with our ultra-sackphobic offense on a dry field.
Secondly, I will admit some players, mainly defensive ones, came out flat for the game, went through the motions and eventually quitted on the last touchdown run by Utah. Everything about the Emerald Bowl made it seem like this would happen. Fans booed it when it was announced and we went from playing LSU to a respectable Big 10 team to suddenly a mid-major team that barely got into a bowl. Most players could no longer play in front of their families and to top it all off, they had to leave for SF on Christmas day. We all hated being in the "Nut Bowl" and the players were no expception. For this, Chan does bear the blame, but realize that Tenuta's screamin and cussin also didn't get some of the defensive players to give it their all.
The second point also shows my main qualm about Chan, which my earlier post tried to show he has been fixing since his first two years. He first came in like a pro coach with pro players and the WTF games happened. However, even last year, he put rat traps in each of the players lockers before the UConn game, warning them of a "trap" game. I bet Chan didn't do that when he first came in to Tech.
Now, he's made even more strides with coaching changes, firing the "laziest man in the edge building" and hiring some real Tenuta-esque discipline coaches. Every report I've seen shows a new sense of urgency and discipline in the spring practices and the recruiting has also been looking up. For these reasons, and because Chan will likely be here for at least another two years anyway, we should support our coach and what he's doing.
