Bias in the Star Rankings???

I came across a UGA recruit named Chris Davis who is a 3 star #29 Offensive Guard in the country. Chris is 6-4 245 lbs and runs a 5.31 40 yard dash. These are all recorded times by Rivals. Scout has him listed as a 3 star offensive player as well. Chris benches 305 and squated over 400 lbs. While respectable, they aren't scorching as far as a top Div 1 recruit is concerned.

Take a look here: http://georgiatech.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=38273

Our commit Heath Batchelor is listed at 6-7 285 lbs. Benches over 400 lbs and squats over 500 lbs. He's been recorded at 5.13 seconds in the 40 yard dash, but Scout has him at 4.9 seconds which is scorching for an OT. Rivals has him as unranked and 2 stars.

So for all you guys who get your panties in a wad over recruiting and stars, here's just another prime example of rankings catering to the bigger programs. Stars mean nothing. There is a lot of parity in college football.

Interesting catch, BoR.

245 pounds? If we signed him the crying and moaning would never end.

He also had other offers from Troy State and thats it. Yet he gets a 3 star ranking. I'm waiting for someone to tell me he is a "playa" and then I'm going to go tell them to look at the footage for Ben Anderson and tell me the same.

I'm fine with us flying under the radar in recruiting. We haven't been high in the rankings as of late, yet we compete with the Auburns and Miamis and Georgias who come up with top 10 recruiting classes. if we can ever find a way to get over the humpo and beat teams we are supposed to beat and stop shooting ourselves in the foot in big games (NCST, UVA this year we should have won), (VPI on national TV we got routed) (blew it late against UGA) .

First and foremost, we have to shore up the special teams. You can expect Utah to look to beat us on special teams, because its unlikely they can offensively or defensively.

UGA took him because they want to play Troy State

and don't want to have any competition perhaps?

I'm not sure I can't run a 5.31. Very nice catch BOR.

Once we get a few more years in and we are able to show star ratings for every player on the team, we will be able to prove once and for all if ratings lag or the polls lag.

I agree with you that the ratings are flawed, BOR, but aren't they based on more than just size and speed? I would think that there is some consideration given to where a guy is skill -wise in his senior year of High School, but maybe not. At any rate, the guys with the size, speed, and talent often develop into better players than the ones who are rated higher.

Selfishly, I hope this continues. It wont though as soon as we become top 15-10 fixtures.

It like this: having a good team makes your recruits better instead of having good recruits makes you a better team? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wtf.gif

Oh yeah, one more thing. More premium websites and magazines purchased = Better recruits. Yeah, that's the ticket!!

It's sort of a chicken-and-egg sort of thing, isn't it?
