Bill Curry and Johnny Majors reflect on GT/UT series

Now ask Majors what he really thinks of The Great Pumpkin, aka Fat Phil Fulmer, aka Judas Brutus.

And welcome to the board. I will be nice to you.

Are you talking about the coach that won a BCS title and went 45-5 from 1995-98? That coach?

Before I knew who Clay Travis was, or what an insufferable douche he is, I read his On Rocky Top book and thought it was fascinating stuff. It's a shame how everything ended between Fulmer and UT.

Bill Curry is a punk bitch. I don't know any John Major.

It was tough to see Phil go out like that. I read the book as well. It was time for him to go. He had gotten lethargic and recruiting had dropped off considerably. The real culprit for the decline of UT football is former AD Mike Hamilton. He destroyed our athletic department. Hiring Lane Kiffin and then Derek ööööing Dooley.

So it wasn't tough to see Majors get stabbed in the back by Judas Brutus?

Some rough days for you guys, for sure. Nobody (except USC) deserves Kiffykins, and the Dooley hire only makes sense if you're already in the middle of some other psychological trauma. Still, probably the best thing Kiffin has ever done was delivering on his promise to his players that they would never lose to Georgia on his watch.

First of all, I was like 10 ööööing years old when that happened. If I remember correctly, after Majors came back from his surgery he lost 3 straight games to subpar opponents. I like Johnny Majors, he's a Tennessee icon. He got screwed out of a Heisman worse than Manning. In the end it worked out pretty well.

Everybody goes through it. Even Bama has. That's why I'm not an advocate for firing Butch. Coaches used to have time to build a program. Now if you don't win a championship by year 3, you're fired. I don't subscribe to that.

I agree about Kiffin beating UGA. I was at that game, and we totally kicked their ass. Jonathan Crompton decided he would be a QB that day.

He went 11-1 at UT a few years before and won 9 the prior year. One of the 3 losses was to the undefeated National Championship Alabama team, the other two were bookending that game and we're each by a single point. Hell, Fat Phil's band of criminals lost 3/4 a year or so later to start the season and he wasn't shit canned.

Majors was a good coach who likely would have won a title there. 89 was close. Fat Phil failed with Peyton and lucked up when Arkansas' QB layed it on the ground for him.

100% on board with you there. The nature of the coaching carousel has become tiresome and ridiculous. Maybe Butch will be the guy who leads you back to the top of the East, I hope so. That division should always be a fight between Tennessee and Florida, both of whom should sodomize Georgia every single year without exception.

I'm not saying you're wrong. Tennessee has one of the more volatile, idiotic fan bases in the country. I'm just not like most of them. Johnny probably got screwed, but Phil also won 2 SEC titles, a National Title, and he beat Bama and UGA a lot. That goes a long way. He didn't fail with Peyton. We didn't beat Florida with Peyton, not many teams beat Florida back then.

Who cares if we lucked up with Arkansas? Almost every team that wins a title lucks up. Look at Clemson vs State last year or Louisville.

I hope Butch is the guy. He needs to become more human and drop some of the stupid cliches. I honestly believe he's a good guy. He's a helluva recruiter. I think he did a good job of hiring some good coaches, which hopefully means he will delegate more than micromanage.

Yeah, I can't claim to have seen any excess of footage of Butch but the little I have seen/remember gave me the impression that he's in a state of perpetual discomfort when the press is around. Like he's not comfortable being himself and his coachspeak act seems inauthentic and forced. That stuff varies from coach to coach, but it makes a difference in how a coach is perceived and treated and can be a factor in how much time they're given. I can't imagine the "champions of life" business has done him any favors in this regard.

Yeah I don't think he's comfortable in his own skin in front of the media. The "champions of life" thing was pretty bad. Overall, the culture he has established and the character of the majority of the guys he's recruited has been very good.

Well, at least you got rid of him. (The FORMER AD I mean) Coach Fulmer had reached the end of his rope and like a lot of people held on just a little too long, see Joe Paterno and Coach Bowden. It happens but he does have a national championship to show for his time and that's more than the vast majority of coaches can say. A pity that he destroyed his reputation to the point where a fictitious trophy is named for him to glorify athletic thuggery.
