Quick synopsis, from what I remember.
After winning the national championship, Tech fell to 8-5 in ‘91. There was a bit of Team dissection at the Aloha Bowl, led by Willie Clay (whose late INT sealed the victory vs Stanford). The drama had to do with many Tech administrators, their families, coaches families, making the trip while most players families could not. So that’s the background.
Bill Lewis comes in, different type of personality from Ross, and goes 5-6 and 5-6 in his first two seasons. His true downfall was bringing in Tommy Luginbill to replace Donnie Davis at QB, a highly rated in-state QB who never achieved his potential. Right or wrong in the QB decision, this split the locker room and led to Lewis being let go prior to the end of the ‘94 season.
We will never know how things might have shaped out had Homer Rice hired O’Leary in ‘92, rather than Lewis, then O’Leary in ‘95.
