Braine\'s ego our downfall? (long)

The Hewitt hire was inspired, and everyone made a big fuss about it. I think all the talk went to Braine's head, convincing him he's got some kind of gift for coach picking. His interview quotes after the Gailey hire attest to this; all that stuff about how he "just knew" the moment he started talking to CG that he was the man for the job. Did he ever consider maybe consulting someone else in the program before giving over to his AD muse? The women's volleyball players came into his office and said they wanted Shymansky as coach. Turned out to be a great move. But women's volleyball isn't a high-profile hire, so Braine defers to the players. If he had listened to the FB players who chanted the name of the coach they wanted, maybe there'd be some continuity in play and recruiting and we wouldn't be staring into the abyss like this... Just me venting. Sorry.

Name me an AD who doesn't think they can pick coaches and I'll show you one who doesn't deserve his job. The search committee had to approve any pick Braine made, so he wasn't the only one to think CG was the guy, so much for your concern about consulting someone else in the program. Finally, we've rehashed this deal about who the players want ad infinitum. Sometimes it works and sometimes it's a dismal failure. There are just as many examples of each. And, no offense to the women's volleyball team, but comparing that hire to the football position is like comparing a high school conference championship to the BCS title game.

What really kills me about Tech fans is that we have absolutely no confidence in our program. If one bad year is enough to derail everything we have going for us, ruin recruiting, and consign us to the bottom of the ACC then we don't have a program at all and we should just give it up. Kids are still talking to our coaches and are interested in playing here. We won't know how recruiting turns out for several months now, but many of you are giving up already. I'm not trying to make it seem that everything is fine and dandy but the depths of depair some of you have hit is ludicrous.

You're pretty much on the money. Hewitt had established himself as a recuiter at Villanova and a coach at Siena even if he wasn't well-known. Cremins' Iron 5 star system had become obsolete in the one-and-done Marbury world. Hewitt's style of play fits in perfectly in the new world of college basketball. With footbal, Tech is not one of those schools that can fill holes with JUCO's or simply get a certain number of quailty recruits like the Florida schools no matter who is coaching. The type of coach of Tech needs in football was either a great recruiter or a coach like Bobby Ross who can take good to average recruits and make them into excellent players. I'm not sure if Gailey qaulifies on either level. He had never coached at the D1 level before Tech. There are question marks about his recruiting abilities as well. The rest of the year and signing day 2003 will give us a better indication.

Beezoner,
No question about it...we will be paying for Braine's folly for a long long time.
We deserved better.

Nobody can coach at Tech.
Nobody can recruit at Tech.
MacWhorter is God.
How dare Dave Braine not hire God.

same story, different words.

Dave was not allowed to hire who he wanted. If blame is to come, and Chan will be given a chance, then Clough is to answer for it.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">You are exactly right, ncjacket. You have said this many times and what amazes me is that you don't lose patience with the posters who are determined that we are ruined with Gailey as coach. There must be something else going on with some of these folks besides college football.

At any rate, I call for us to stop bickering from now through the UVA game, and hang together as fans of Georgia Tech football. Maybe we'll make some good karma for the team!

All Together!!!

GO JACKETS!!

Beezoner..........see Carl Torbush for what happens when the AD listens to chanting players. Beeware you are a detriment to this board and the Tech program.

IMO, DB and "search" committee should always be looking around. We were caught in the lurch last yr., and, from outside appearances, DB was just scrambling around. Since CG refused buyout clause, he could throw his hands up and leave whenever he feels like it. I just hope we will be better prepared next time.

You can take it to the bank, if the committee was not convinced Gailey was the right choice, he would not have been hired. Gailey did not make this choice on his own.

In fact, once again, it was the logical choice between Mac and Gailey. No AD in the entire world would have chosen Mac over Gailey. That is pure folly by the ostrichs.

I do agree that an AD should always be looking aroudn at who the next hire should be. That's the nature of that job. DB should have some kind of list for all our HC slots in case someone leaves. That's not the same as having a "search committe" actively looking for coaches though. It's just like keeping an eye out for talent in your field of work. You never know when you might have an opening.
