Bud Carson

Rest In Peace Bud

He had a tough assignment on the Flats following Coach Dodd. Did a great job as DC in the NFL.

Re: Rest In Peace Bud

Is Bud where we got the Budwiser cheer from? Heard it mentioned before, but never asked any old guys. Confirm or deny?

Re: Rest In Peace Bud

I seriously doubt it. I think that cheer was started back when Budweiser introduced that tune in a television commercial, and the Tech band picked it up and started playing it at games. My best guess (which is not very good) is that it started back when Pepper Rogers was the coach, maybe even later than that, but certainly not when Bud was there.

Wasn't sure about the timeframe, I was told that it was originally "Bud is wiser" to the tune of the commercial. Sounded a bit off to me, but you never know where these things come from.

Didn't know that.

Coach Carson was one of the greatest coaches to ever grace the Flats. Following Coach Dodd was impossible but his W/L record doesn't accurately reflect the man.

The 9-3 season should have bought Carson more time but back in those days if you didn't start delivering a bowl a year like Dodd you were out. I witnessed a slew of those games back then and we came up short and were out classed a couple of times all the while going through a tremendous upheaval of losing a 20 some odd year legend as coach.

Great football genius never fully appreciated by the hill or by us. Given time Bud Carson could have built a National program here. But we wanted it to be on the heels Of Bobby Dodd. In retrospect it's not fair what we did to Coach Carson. We ran him off.

We're better off to have known him.

Hardest Lick I Ever Saw Was From Carson\'s....

defense on the 71 team. We were playing Michigan State at Grant Field and I was a 14 year old kid sitting in the North end zone. We were punting and the Michigan State punt returner was right in front of me and should have called a fair catch but didn't, big mistake. As soon as his hands touched the ball he was just about knocked out of his shoes. I still can remember his head snapping back, and how he held onto the ball I'll never know. That 71 team could have easily won 7 or 8 games. Going 6-5 with all the preseason hype, losing to UGA, and getting killed by Ole Miss in the Peach was his undoing.

Re: Rest In Peace Bud

The Bud(weiser) Song was there when Bud Carson was there. And it was the definitely there when Pepper was around. That was a big part of every home game - the visitors loved it. At one time, I think we received national recognition on TV from Anheiser Busch for our adopting the song as part of game cheering effort.

Bud Carson, who died Wednesday, coached Georgia Tech from 1967-71.

Emphysema, according to the papers here in Pittsburgh. He was, by the way, very popular here...the paper called him 'a defensive genius'. He is credited for designing the Steel Curtain defense when he was here.

Re: Rest In Peace Bud

Good call, 8TIMELTRMAN. I just took a few moments to research it, and the "When you say Budweiser, you've said it all" song was copyrighted in 1970. That was while Bud was still at Tech, and I'll bet the Tech band picked it up pretty quickly.

Re: Rest In Peace Bud

I have wondered a few times about Bud being played. The Carson link makes perfect sense. Very clever too.
All I know is that when winning a tough game after 3, "Budweiser" gives me goose bumps.

\"Coach Carson was one of the greatest coaches...

to ever grace the Flats"....Thank you gnats67/ You spoke the absolute truth. Were it not for "certain feelings", he would have gone on to lead Tech to great heights. The unspeakable "I" word played a major part in his demise, and there were definite elitists that were ready to smack him down at given opportunity. He was left with rag-tag: talent, facilities, and support.
If Bobby Dodd had given him half the support that was given Bill Curry he would have left a great record/legacy. Demetrius, consoloborus, censaco!!! Now and forever!!!! Don't Mess with "Bud"!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nono.gif

Right on the money, Techs!
