As we celebrate Thanksgiving with our family and friends tomorrow, many of us will remember the Tech-Georgia Freshman game that was played every year on Thanksgiving Day at Grant Field that helped to benefit Scottish Rite Children's hospital in Atlanta. It was played every year until the early 1990's because of NCAA limitations.

That was when freshmen weren't allowed to play with the varsity.

Great tradition. I went to a few of those my own self.

Could it be played with ineligible students? We have enough attrition every year that we should run two deep at OL

It was a huge part of the whole weekend. With ineligible freshmen it was what Signing Day is now--a preview of your team's future. Thanksgiving, freshman, Saturday, varsity and I think the basketball teams played Saturday night. Idiots that don't respect this rivalry generally are too young to remember those days.

The last one that I remember was the one Pat Moriarty had a pretty good day.
Really would like to see this game come back, it seems it did go on for a little while even after freshman were eligible for varsity play didn't it?
Why couldn't you take the 25-30 players on the varsity squad that really don't have a chance to play in a regular season varsity game & begin to play it again?
Not only would it benefit a charity but allow coaches a chance to see kids in game action. Possibly with an NCAA exemption that would not affect varsity eligibility.

My Dad had coached Billy Payne at Dykes High, so we went to our first Thanksgiving Day game to see him play in ‘65. We had a great time and went back to several more. I was a freshman at the game Moriarity played in in ‘73. We had a great freshman team with Mike Johnson at QB that year - Daykin, Kyle, Sims, Tierney, Price, Moriarity, Johnson - all part of a fine class Fulcher recruited after the Liberty Bowl season.

Anyway, a great tradition for a great cause. A good Thanksgiving to watch parades, watch the freshman game with the Shriners band, enjoy dinner at Camelia Gardens (a nice mix of Turkey and dressing with Chinese food) and then catch the lighting of the tree at Rich’s.

Don't forget the Pink Pig!

Despite all the blessings to be thankful for - there is just a slight bit of sadness, or melancholy, brought out by these memories.

God bless to all and their families.

Some great memories....a wonderful day and time

That is nice they did that! So was that the JV football team that would play? I seem to remember in my old programs from the 80s there being a photo of a jv team.

They typically played about a 4-5 game schedule...Aub, Tenn, UGA

i recall a few times towards the end of the tradition, that there would be a general call for any tech students that wanted to suit up and bang heads with the dwags because there weren't enough freshmen to field a team.
also, lots of great fights at the end of the games.

Yes, for decades. Freshmen became eligible in football and basketball in 1972. (They became eligible in all other sports in 1968.)
