Butker nails 71 yd FG (in pre-game)

Something something... Paul Johnson couldn't recruit...

Johnson gave scholarships to Moore, Butker, and King at K. Only one worked out. And we won Butker because factories don't usually burn scholarships on kickers.

That said Butker gave us one of the great all-time UGA wins so maybe he was worth 3 scholarships.

I've always wondered this. Is field goal distance:
(a) Yard line plus 17
(b) Distance from place ball is snapped to the vertical plane formed by the goal posts

If (b), maybe snapping from the left hash adds a yard at long enough distances?

I think they actually watch where the ball is placed for the kick, add 10 yards and that is the distance. They don't just go off the LOS.

(I assume they round for balls placed between yard lines)

I looked and it's +10 for end zone and +7 for presumed snap distance. That's pre-kick, when they say "he's going to try a 49-yarder". So it's just the distance from the spot it's kicked plus 10. 70 yarder

And unless I am mistaken, punt distance is measured from the LOS.

Factories absolutely burn schollys on PKs.

I think some do and some don't. I heard Saint Richt earlier this year saying that Miami was the first school he's coached at that had to use a scholarship for a kicker. Meaning he must not have done it at UGA, and they didn't do it at FSU when he was there.

All those "wide right" PKs FSU had under Booby Bowden had schollys. It's unusual for a factory to have a walk-on PK. Only an idiot HC would undervalue that position, given its importance.

How much higher in elevation is Mexico City than Denver?

We need a game in La Paz, which is at 12k. Might actually have some issues with HAPE at that point, but might be a good way to plug some ads for Viagra, since the little blue pill helps with altitude.

While you're disregarding his achievement due to altitude, take a look at this article from the summer.

I had intended to post earlier, but didn't. Now seems like the right time.
Shows how difficult this really is -- from any altitude -- due to geometry and the imperfect shape of the foot/shoe. It's a very Tech-friendly read.
