Ask Calvin Johnson to rate his season, and he pauses, weighs it out loud and concludes it has been "successful" and "pretty good."
Reporters who cover the ACC have given a different answer, voting Georgia Tech's All-America receiver the league's player of the year. The award was announced Wednesday.
Johnson received 66 votes from 80 members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. Defensive end Gaines Adams of Clemson, the ACC's defensive player of the year, received six votes. Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan received five.
Tech's only previous ACC player of the year was Joe Hamilton, in 1999. Johnson is the second junior to win the award in the last 25 years and the first since Florida State's Charlie Ward in 1992.
Johnson leads the league with 59 catches, 899 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns, all career highs. He also has run for 33 yards and completed a 7-yard pass.
He has set Tech's career record of 26 touchdown catches and needs just 57 yards to pass Kerry Watkins for second place behind Kelly Campbell on Tech's career reciving yardage list.
Offensive coordinator Patrick Nix calls Johnson the key to the Yellow Jackets' attack. Chan Gailey, who coached Michael Irvin in the NFL, says he had never coached a receiver with Johnson's mix of size, speed and hand-eye coordination. Johnson stands 6-foot-5.
Johnson is one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation's top college receiver.
His season started with four 100-plus-yard receiving games in a six-week span, and though he has had some frustrations — no catches at Clemson, three catches for 13 yards at North Carolina, two for 13 yards at Georgia — he still set Tech?s season record for touchdown catches.
A strong finish in Saturday's ACC championship game against Wake Forest and in a bowl game could give him the 240 yards he needs to break Jonathan Smith's Tech season record of 1,138 receiving yards.
"I've produced more than I have in my previous two years, so it's been successful," Johnson said Monday. "There's still some more goals that we have and that I have personally. I'm still trying to strive for those. We've got two games left. I have done pretty good."
